Vintage Colnago.
8 Attachment(s)
Hi all - I'm new here and have what I think is a mid 80's or so Colnago road bike that I am trying to ID.
It has a Campagnolo Super Record group on it and has 3TTT pantographed stem and 3TTT bars. The serial number on the rear drop out is 0749. Is it a Super? |
I would agree that it looks like a mid 80's (83 - 85) bike. I thing a bit of elbow grease would do wonders to its overall look.
Definitely spongeworthy!!! |
It's a Super, maybe '83-86.

Great bike, I would restore it to like new condition.

I had the same thoughts given the amount of rust. Mine is a Superissimo version. Clean it up and ride it to determine fit and rideability.
I appreciate your pictures as there are a lot of variations in Colnago frame features. I have yet to see a SN on any Colnago of this vintage. Mine has a 53 on the DS RDO and USA on the NDS RDO. Are those GL330 rims? Interesting to see the LF record hubs. Mine came with GL330 and Mavic 501RD's. I went OCD on pic of mine. they are here if interested: http://s985.photobucket.com/albums/ae332/SJX426/ |
Thanks for the response guys! I rescued the bike from the neighbour's bin, it belonged to his son who had married and moved out of home and forgot about it. I was having a cold grog with him and asked him what he was doing with the bike - as soon as I spotted it I thought there was no way that bike should end up in the bin! He said take it so I nabbed it before his son could find out and change his mind for him!
I have mostly stripped it down now and am going over everything and restoring it - it's quite amazing how well it is coming up. I will strip that frame right down, sandblast it and get it re-chromed and painted [or powder coated]. Should look a million bucks - I was thinking of painting it the original pearl white and I am trying to source the correct decals for it. Love the Superissimo - beautiful! I'm not sure what rims mine has - I'll check it out tomorrow and report back... |
Looks as if it would do just as well with some polishing elbow grease; there's still a lot of originality left in that thing.

I agree with cudak888. I say try an oxalic acid bath, treat with framesaver and polish. I bet it would look great...
Then if it still looks shabby or you're not happy with it go for a full resto. |
Hi Spongeworthy,
I would say that most forum members like originality, so cleaning up the original paint job is highly recommended. If you have to re-paint the frame though, new decals (very good copies) are available on ebay - just search for Colnago or Campagnolo. "Cyclemondo" (Australian supplier and manufacturer) produce a variety of decal sets for Colnago which are first class and relatively easy to fit. I think a set costs about $50 - $60. You can look through the various sets to find the appropriate set for your bike. His decal sets are used around the world by people restoring bikes if an original decal set can't be sourced. The Campagnolo groupset was top of the wish-list for nearly every bike rider in the mid 80's. The Colnago frame was also a much desired article too. By the way, do you realise just how lucky you were to find a classic Italian bike in hard waste. Many have looked for years without that sort of luck - me included. Best of luck with your new Italian classic bike. Gary. |
