C and V Sunglasses???

We all make considerable effort having our bikes looking good as well as riding well. There are hot rods, but generally we try to keep things looking the part and we probably don't use ultra modern bottle cages on classic frames. Many of the members also wear wool jerseys and the occasional tweed for a ride.

So while trying to look like you're from 1973, what kind of sunglasses do you, or would you like to, wear? Personally I just wear everyday clothing for most rides. I find sunglasses an absolute must for riding, but hate how ultra modern looking glasses clash with a lugged steel frame.

I have no idea why this annoys me, especially considering helmets already give the more modern look and I have no sense of clothing style or fashion sense, but I hate wearing sunglasses that look like they came out of 2020 while riding a bike that has a more refined sense of dignity. I should probably also add that I generally dislike sunglasses and only wear them as a necessity while riding. Usually I think they make me look ridiculous.

I wear the same RayBan Aviators I had in 1982, or another pair I picked up in 1987.

I do NOT look good in aviators. I end up looking like a mafia accountant.

Modern almost-aviator-style, gold wire-rimmed w/prescription lenses. Good side coverage, good vertical range, and the style has been around a long time. You wear what you got but functionality is important, just like the helmet. That's me on the left (with the only steel bike).

And on another occasion, in a galaxy far, far away.

George Mount was always sportin' aviators.

The functionality part is part of the problem...I find Oakleys always go too far back with no angle and they interfere with my helmet. Aviators usually don't feel comfortable and I sweat too much with them, beyond looking silly in them. Usually the ultra modern stuff is the only stuff that feels good on rides, but I hate how they look. I'm hoping the ones I picked up today above feel as good riding as they did walking around. They're a little heavy, but I have some hopes for these.

If you like Wayfarers, you'll LOVE the Vuarnets! They weigh about 1/3 less, the (glass) lenses are almost impossible to scratch or break (!), and the Nylon™ frames are nearly indestructible. I used to like Wayfarers too, but Vuarnets are the Super Record of vintage sunglasses. Only problem with Vuarnet, is cost and local availability (and that they're not US made).

+1 on the Wayfarers.

Mine are prescription with polarized lenses. Cuts glare and soothes my eyeballs.

And you put them on your face.

I wear my dad's Wayfarers from '87 in my car. I've worn them to a 'cross race, but I've also worn a tutu to a 'cross race. I usually just wear some cheap-o glasses I got at RiteAid.

BBM, do you wear yours when driving the Porsche? It's like we're identical except your car goes 0-60 in like four seconds, and mine gets 30mpg on the highway.

I went the other way - first Cat-Eye's when I was skiing a lot (in the 80's!!), but like the Wayfarer II style better now.

0-60 is more like 6 seconds or so, and only 23-24mpg. It's worth it, though..... :)

Our converted veggie oil mobile goes 0-60 in about 3 minutes, but we do get about 50mpg. Not sure how I feel about that trade off.

Life is too short to spend it filling at the gas station :D

+1 on Vuarnets. I picked up several pairs and love the lenses. Fantastic optics, great construction too. Like them better than Ray-Bans, another old favorite...which I've lost numerous pairs of too. ;)

I still have a true C&V bike sunglasses...original Rudy Projects. Carbon frames like the Modolo Kronos levers. The lexan lenses haven't fared as well as the frame. Foam sweat bar long gone. Fit was excellent, protection and wind deflection was 1st rate, worked so well, I used to ski in them to protect my eyes. I like them better than my costly Oakley's that I got for a present. Those fit goofy and you're always aware of them on your face.

No one I knew rode those...I tried a pair and sweated like a beast. Also uncomfortable.

And the straght arms go back too far and interfere with my helmet.

I'm pretty sure my dad has a pair of Oakley Factory Pilots that he uses when mowing the lawn...

:innocent:
