Source for Campy alloy groups???
 

Looking at the current campy offerings, it is mostly carbon and black and little classic alloy. It looks like an alloy set could be put together from a mix of groups and and the triple components.

Any ideas for sources for new, but a couple of year old all alloy groups? I am beginning to think I might want to squirrel on away soon than later for a future reward build.

Your probably looking at something like a couple of years old Veloce group or older Centaur/Chorus (think 2001'ish). I get my stuff through eBay mostly, I can sometimes find stuff on Craigslist but have never wanted the full gruppo. There are a couple of dealers on eBay that sometimes have the older stuff, High on Bikes in the UK and Crosslake Sales, Ive gotten alot of disposable items from them (cassettes, chainrings) along with some FD and cranksets when they had them.

Some of the older Chorus and Centaur stuff you find in all alloy also but it probably won't be NOS.

I know Bilenky has an alloy Chorus 10sp group, but he wants a good bit for it. I can't remember the price...maybe 1700ish.

I know a source for an alloy 11sp athena group, but not with alloy levers.

I have an all alloy Veloce gruppo w/ UT CT 50/34 crankset...only "downside" is the Ergos are escape type. The Gruppo has only a few rides on it (few more on the FD). I could provide Italian or English cups as well.

Yeah, I found my Campy alloy bits on eBay and craigslist. It took me 6 months to find a set of decent condition alloy chorus ergo's for a reasonable price. Yup, 6 months of being outbid over and over again. It was pretty discouraging.

That Hampsten is still running through my dreams. I can't believe no one bit on that.

Yes, it is absolutely a find. Nearly new and only $1,200 or so.

I've really enjoyed riding bikes with fenders again, and I have noticed the eyelets on that badboy.

By the way, there is another gorgeous Hampsten on offer in Seattle.

2011 Athena has alloy shifters now. Downside is that they use the new 'power shift' mech that doesn't allow multiple shifts in both directions (as was with the case with the old 'Escape Mech' they did a few years back. Best prices on new Campy groups can be found at VeloMine.com - US based shop that will price match pretty much anyone (including UK shops). Fantastic customer service as well.

If you want Record in all alloy, I think you'd have to go back to 2000 or so (8/9 sp). Great grouppo, btw.

I see complete NOS grouppos pop up once and a while, but on the typical Ebay and CL listings.

I know there are some folks on the 'net who sell NOS classic stuff (at a premium), mainly in the UK,and they may have some of the early Ergo 8/9 grouppos. I'll dig and post links if I come up with anything.

I know where you can find a early Corse Record group but it is about $1700 IIRC, I'll check if you are interested

I personally really don't get the whole NOS thing...at least if you intend to ride it. To me NOS just means I'm paying a premium and losing it instantly.

Yup - 10 speed Record never came with alloy shifters. And the last set of silver Record hubs I tracked on eBay went for just shy of $400.

I guess we read a different Serotta forum then. I've never seen so much editorializing in a classified section before.

That being said, most sellers and buyers there are great people, and it is the place to get nice, modern, high end stuff.

Not sure what the repeated and wearisome comparisons between BF and the other forums is, though. BF C&V is more inclined toward collecting and preserving a range of cycling history. Serotta Forum, for one, is geared toward the high end custom rider (as one would expect on a custom builder's website). The two seem complementary to me, not at odds.

I have three complete Record 8 speed groups and one of them is on a Super Presitge DeRosa I am about to sell that is a little too small for me. I was going to sell the whole bike, but I could be possibly be talked into selling the group if I think I will end up in the same place dollar wise when I go to sell the frame and fork separately. And each of these groups is in very nice condition.

Not to mention the fact that lots of times it's hard for me to ride stuff that's real pretty. Many times, after I've bought something real nice, I end up selling it after it's sat around for six months and I 've taken it out 3 times on calm sunny days......

Cuda2K hit it with Velo-Mine. They are posting up an all alloy Centaur Gruppo on eBay.

Not in Record. Chorus, yes, but even it had the carbon levers, if memory serves.
I Bought the 10sp Record the year it came out, and the RD faceplate and brake levers were carbon.

I couldn't quite remember. I know at some point the Chorus changed over to CF levers, must've been mid '00s.

I bought my SR group from Velomine and it was a great transaction. I do feel a little dirty about not supporting my LBS, but it was $1,000...and I don't have 1,000 to "do the right thing" with.

Those are Centaur hubs. Peter White thinks they are cheap junk, and rants about them HERE. Also - I'll bet squirtdad isn't looking for a standard or compact double, but I may be wrong on that.

Personally, I'd go to the secondary market and build a nice alloy set around either Chorus or Centaur alloy levers and Chorus hubs.
