Scored a Spectrum...

12 Attachment(s)
Yesterday I picked up an '85 Spectrum sport tourer frameset locally.

I think I got a decent deal, and the workmanship is top notch regardless. Frame is a mix of SL and SP according to Jeff @ Spectrum. The frame has been repainted, and kinda needs it again. It has internal cable routing on all cables and an internal path for lighting or computer wiring on the fork I guess.

Now I need to decide what to build it up with:

1) Centaur Century gruppo
2) Centaur with some CF bits (alloy cranks though)
3) Complete DT shifter Chorus gruppo from the unloved Greg Lemond

Thoughts???

Here's some pics:

Wow.

Does the internal housing need to be refreshed for Ergo's? How?

buldogge 04-12-11 09:41 AM

Do you mean for cable size? Cable sizes would be smaller today...

???

Nice Find Mark!
I think the Century group would go well with the current Paint color. Kind of a gray scale build.

That bike is so awesome and such a catch! TK, for my money, is right with Sachs as the country's best. My Merlin, designed by TK, was the best riding bike I'd ever ridden until the Marnati.

Spoke to Jeff again today...bike was originally jade green and taupe.

He said Tom can supply decals...so...I may repaint it locally.

I would love to have TK repaint it, but we're talking $500-700.

Friction in general. I didn't think the old housing was up to modern spec.

buldogge 04-12-11 10:08 AM

I'm sorry...but...I must be dense today...brand-new, current campy housing and cables will fit the installed stainless tubing.

As far as friction issues with modern 10s or 11s on internal routed frames in general...that I dunno!

I agree...if I stay charcoal/silver the Century gruppo would look awesome.

What are your thoughts on the frame colors???

I vote century group. though a frame like that looks good in anything.

I can't comment on your density, but I had no idea that was permanent stainless routing. I've never seen such elaborate routing on anything other than on crazy aero bikes.

The internal cable tube looks to be a metal tube, not a flexible cable housing. The metal tube should be at least as stiff as index cable housing (if not stiffer), I dont forsee that it will cause compression problems effecting index shifting performance. Just make sure the ID of the tube is clean and lubed for low-friction so the rear derailler can pull cable back when shifting to high gear.

Nice score. IMO, those Spectrums have the best looking, sexiest seat cluster in the business:

I really like the internal cable routing. I've been "hanging" around @ Spectrum for close to a year and haven't seen anything like that on their new frames. Very cool frame!

I would ship it back to Tom and Jeff! I LOVE their work and Tom can really paint!
Then I would find a 10 speed alloy chorus group and put that on it!

But then I wouldn't want to ride it!

If you are going to keep the bike, I would not let anyone paint it but TK!

RobE30 04-12-11 11:12 AM

After seeing Tom's paint jobs up close, they look like they are still wet after drying. They are amazing!

Poguemahone 04-12-11 11:13 AM

Man, I'm just lovin' the stuff you guys found this past weekend. There's three real beauties up here now... great find once again!

buldogge 04-12-11 11:21 AM

I'm gonna keep it for sure...but...the paint job would triple the cost of the frame! I can paint it locally for <$200 (doing the prep work myself). Unfortunately, Jeff said they no longer have the professional champions seat tube decals.

I also considering respraying the headtube, toptube, and the rear triangle and touching up other spots by hand...unfortunately there is a huge paint scar/crater right on the top edge of the DT spectrum 'S'!

I'll have to ponder it for a couple days...

Yeah...checkout the detail photo of the inside of the BB shell...between the mitering and the cable tubing it is pretty cool.

I need to use one of the gruppos I have here...too much stuff kicking around...besides, I see no need for Chorus over Centaur really (although I am putting 2010 Chorus 11 on my incoming Meech)!

Thanx...

FWIW, my source for this frame was the same one I got the De Rosa Pro and the Andy Gilmour Team from.

If anyone is interested, I also have access to a 59cm Guerciotti red/chrome fork and a Keith Anderson 50-52cmish in yellow. I can get more details, pics, and pricing if need be.

Picchio Special 04-12-11 11:36 AM

It's very nice, even though it apparently doesn't have the ultra-coolio neo-Bostonian dropout junctions.

I'm not jealous. Really. Not at all.

buldogge 04-12-11 12:42 PM

Do you have a pic Picchio???

What a pretty frameset.

Lovin' the seat cluster as well. Somewhat reminiscent of my Kvale.

With a mix of SL and SP, it should give a nice ride as well.

I'd vote for no repaint, Honjos or Berthouds if they fit, and Centaur if you have it.

In fact, the color scheme reminds me a little of that super sweet silver Chris Bishop at NAHBS.

Remember this one Mark?
