My wife finally decided she was willing to ride to lose some weight so I have spent the last few days trying to resurrect her bike, a 1991 Marin Muir Wood. She hasn't ridden it in about 18 years, so I was afraid of what I might find. But after cleaning it up a bit, degreasing and then regreasing the shifters and derailleurs everything is working ok. I did have to put some new tires on it of course, but other than that, it is stock. When I rode it around the block to test it out, I remembered how much I hated the "biopace" chain ring :)

Can't you find her a bike that will make her want to actually ride? Unless she plans to ride the bike off-road she will get much more pleasure out of a bike that is more sensible for the purpose. I have always maintained that the use of mountain bikes on road have discouraged more people from riding regularly than anything else. When used for their intended purpose, MTB are great, but when used for other applications, they are about as wrong as you can get and encourage people to not look after their bikes like they should.

That's not a mtb, it's a hybrid, and that's actually a good place to start again. Not everyone is a high speed roadie and it's not a bad idea to have a rugged bike.

The Muir Wood is a great all-around bike. They can be set up to do pretty well on the road and on paths. I've seen them with upright bars, racks, and most owners of them tell me they like them. I've never seen one like that; I've only seen all-black, but they sound like great commuters and play bikes.

Monde - When she got his bike, our group of friends were doing a lot of off road riding. I would love to get her a proper road bike, but money is tight and we already had this bike. Now at least she can start riding around the neighborhood and if she decides she wants take the next step then we can get her a proper road bike.
