njbikeguy?

Hello, C&V. There is a guy in my town who sells tons of bike on Craigslist. These are mostly vintage ten speeds and 90s mtbs, and they are pretty expensive (this is a college town...) He has a Photobucket account under "njbikeguy", and here are some examples of his posts:
http://cnj.craigslist.org/bik/2322511149.html
http://cnj.craigslist.org/bik/2318141319.html
http://cnj.craigslist.org/bik/2322500726.html
Does anyone know who he is? Has anyone done business with him? Does he have a BikeForums account? Is his stuff way too expensive? Just curious, as I don't know much about old bikes.

I don't know, but he never seems to sell much. He just relists the same things over and over and over again. Some seem decent, but his prices are on the high side (at least his starting prices - it's possible he's asking ridiculous prices for his "good" bikes), and there's no telling how extensively he's reconditioned the bikes. He'd probably do better to take the photos in front of something attractive, rather than those grimy walls. Makes it look like he's keeping those bikes hostage in his basement.

Anyway, best way to find out is to contact him. Let us know what you learn!

Spoke with the seller from Highland Park the other week, seemed like a nice enough guy. Honest atleast. I was looking at a chome frame he had listed, and asked whether it had a small dent or if it was the flash? He told me it was a small dent which saved me a trip out to see it.

I'm curious also. Do flippers get flagged in your area Zaphod?

Its not because they're flippers, its the "professional" ads listing multiple bikes and essentially hawking their "Showroom" that get flagged.

If you make a basic ad, 4 pics no links, no supersized pics linked in from picasa or photobucket it will stay up, but if you use HTML and link in big nice looking pics your ad will get flagged....at least mine do in NNJ, and I only list about 4 items a year on CL.

If I had posted the Ad in the OP on the NNJ craigslist it would never even see the light of day.

In Portland and Seattle, the flippers get flagged when regular users grow annoyed from seeing their same ads reposted every other day.

Never happened to me. But the guy referenced in the OP could definitely qualify as a spammer. Still, I don't flag flippers - there are really not all that many listings on NNJ CL or Central NJ CL for it to matter much.

There's a guy who lists a kayak in the central NJ CL every week or so, always a different one. If you email him about it, he'll email back a list of all the kayaks he has for sale which is, at times, a whole garage full, complete with photos and comprehensive discussion of the pros and cons of each boat. He's very professional, and evidently very savvy about how to use CL effectively. He's not even located in NJ (though not far), so I presume he lists in lots of CL locations.

marley mission 04-15-11 09:27 AM

well - anyway - i'm just saying that the guy is nice and i have picked up 4 bikes from him and am very happy with the purchases and also i liked him alot - would do biz again (if the wife let me buy more bikes ;) )

maybe some super flagger just has is out for me

regardless I don't flag either, I could really care less if people wanna use CL as an advertising venue.

Oh, sorry, those were your ads? ;)

noglider 04-15-11 02:50 PM

I took a very quick glance. He seems to be a competent mechanic. And if his prices are high, he seems to be willing to wait. I have no problem with a guy doing stuff like this. I charge high prices, too, because I feel that once I let go of a bike, it's valuable. I do darned good work, and I'm available to talk endlessly before and after the sale.

I don't know who he is, though. I used to spend time in Highland Park when I lived nearby in Edison. Howdy.

potatochupz 01-23-12 09:54 PM

I'm wondering if any one has done business with him since this last post. I'm thinking of buying a bike from him but I have a funny feeling these are bikes stolen from students...

What makes you think that....other than its NJ?
