my gazelle retro restoration is *finally* finished! >>>

an early/mid '90s gazelle i just had restored with the '70 corporate theme. just got these pics of the almost finished restoration. before i started, when i would close my eyes and envision the end-product, this is exactly what i had in mind.

needless to say, i'm chuffed to bits!

Nice work. Is the build 80s or 90s?

Am I glad (or sad) you're chuffed?

predominately c-record build with cobolatos, the blue jewel will pick up the blue panels nicely!

and be happy!

Nice! I just sold a Gazelle Tour de L'Avenir fixie. It wan't Reynolds or anything, but it was a long, ultra comfy touring frame that I loved for many years. I'd like to get another one one day as my road bike, something with similar geometry but quality tubing.

some of the Tour De L'Avenirs had 3 tubes 531. They show up from time to time.

That paint scheme is pretty sweet. I've no room for more bikes but if one of these with green panels like the one below came along in my size I might have to build me a shed.

Enjoy!

Nice theme: having a late Dieren built Gazelle finished in team Vredestein/Campagnolo colours - one of the nicest CM paints ever imo. I see the fork didn't make its return? What were your considerations on that?

Must have been a technically challenging fitting cleats to the flip flops!

didnt like the aesthetic of this particular design fork, too dainty.

I have a good riding buddy with a Champion Mondial.

Very nice ride, that's for sure.

Nice flip flops btw.

Very nice! Does the stem have some sort of "smoked chrome" finish?

Excellent. Love the straight blade chrome tying in with the chrome stay-ends. Nice work!

The quality of the paint / build is excellent but it got me thinking why take an original 90s Gazelle in lovely condition and then make it something that it's patently not?
It's like buying a new furniture, "distressing" it then trying to pass it off as an antique .... why not just hold out for an original 70s champion and restore that?
But it's your bike and you've done a great quality makeover so no offence meant.

no offense taken!

the big thing is that i like a little chrome, and older gazelles with chrome are just really, really far and few between. i also like stuff that has interesting history, such this ex-pro's frame.

when you see this bike in person, there's no confusing it with a truly vintage gazelle, so there's no passing it off as something it's not. with a paint finish thats higher quality than anything gazelle ever produced in the '70s and straight bladed forks from the '90s and cranks from the '80s...all stuff that i like.

it's clearly a new-ish bike that happens to be inspired by stuff that came well before. a melange retro hommage that's meant to be ridden!

I would have had a chrome Gazelle fork of around the same time. However the one wallymann picked is very alike the Exception fork (the lush fork with the stainless steel Poppe & Pothoff tubing in the insert) and I must say that it looks very good from an aesthetical perspective imho.

Great bike ...but that sticker for preventing the calliper damaging the downtube: couldn't you find something clear for that?

Bike looks amazing. I have to admit those little gaps in the tape around the hoods would nag at me on an otherwise perfect build, but that's a minor gripe.
