How Boss are AMF bikes?
By the looks of steering wheel, I would say they are very Boss...

"Chromed out in places other bikes don't even have places." < My fave.
|
I saw that bike ONCE when I was a kid. I was so envious. And I remember it to this day. I think I was probably about eight years old then. And I'm 50 years old now. And this thread was not the only thing that brings that memory up. I still think about that bike from time to time.
But we didn't say "boss" in New York at the time. I knew they were saying it in other places, though. |
As bikes, not.
As funny bike-like Modernistic objects, very. |
|
Easy to scoff now, but Greg LeMond would never have won the Tour de France had he not adopted AMF's boss drag strip-inspired handlebar-wheel:

I wonder if Bruce Springsteen has one of those..
|
Would hate to see how the frame is constructed, or the wheels for that matter. Quality wasn't their main concern at AMF, and this ain't no Harley.

I too recall lusting over the Fast One as a kid. Then again it seems that I would have been happy with any muscle bike to put my Rat Fink stickers on.
(muscle bike eye candy) Just this weekend my son in law and I were fixing up an old purple AMF "5-speed" for my daughter and I was reminded of AMF quality. This company screwed up bowling balls ferkrisakes. |
I suppose it's Boss in so far as it's the Tony Danza of Muscle Bikes - kind of goofy, sort of charming but definitely stupid after a bit.
|
Da yuts in Souf Philly thought they were boss back in the day.
Seriously; in my youth by bike became my fighter jet, my car, motorcycle, what ever was necessary for that days adventure. Congrats to AMF for playing along! |
I love the curvature of the steering wheel spokes to the bar extension. Very classy - just bend 'em over anything, eh?

Hey, didn't AMF invent the Sunfish?
|
I have never even seen one of those.
Probably by the time that thing hit the market I was lusting after a decent 10 speed. I did have a secondhand Huffy Rail for a couple of years in the early 70's. |
I guess AMF does have some place in history even though some stuff they made was considered junky like the Harley motorcycles that fruther damaged the already struggling reputation the American motorcycle had back when the Japanese were starting to show everyone in the world how to build "proper" bikes. Despite all the complaints about AMF everyone who encountered their products seems to have memories about them, as a kid, the very modern and macho, bold looking "AMF" logo and mostly black graphics was enough to impress me and maybe some classmates I was looking at an at an AMF products with in a catalogue or magazine, regardless on what it was on. We wouldn't have believed right away back then that their best products were bowling equipment..........not that theres anything wrong with bowling......

Velognome, you really led the boy's life. I'm envious. |
AMF actually sponsored a good domestic racing team at one point, that included George Mount. I don't recall who built the actual team bikes - maybe I never knew. Anyone? Bueller?
|
It is so boss that not only does the bike have a bottom bracket but it comes complete with a middle bracket and a top bracket!

Confession time...
I had an AMF Dirt Buster when I was 8 and loved that awful thing. |
