Beautiful Mando... I'm an avid mandolin player and guitarist in a bluegrass band... Here is my list of vintage instruments... Gibson F2 Mandolin 1918?, 1974 Ibanez mandolin project, National O style resenator guitar from 1930s (need restoration), 1960s Yamaha guitar FG-??? first guitar... still sound great. Not vintage... but my gig mandolin is a Eastman 815 with a k&k pickup.

auchencrow... we've got the same taste... Mandolins and Resonator guitars....

I've sold off all my vintage banjos and some of the other guitars to pay for a restoration of a National O style from the 1930s...

Wish list... Gibson Mandola, new electric guitar... torn between Fender Telecaster or that thick gibson sound... I'll have one of each some day.

Our lineup has changed and we're a lot better now... working on recording another album in June... we're a solid local to regional bluegrass band but I'm not quitting my day job... although I'm the only one in the band with a full time job.

Everything's Original as far as I know... it needs the bindings re-done, they're a mess.

Its fairly quiet compared to anything with a big circular sound hole, but the tone is wonderful

also dunno if you call it vibrato or tremelo, but that flying trapeze bridge is hinged and makes some cool sounds if you push on it a little


I'd really like a vintage Resonator...and a Dobro....and a Pedal Steel.

Go for a 30's Kalamazoo KG-31. They're Gibson made with out some of the nicer things in life like truss rods and the like. Their tone is awesome though, the deep V profile of the neck is one that people find strange at first but all fall in love with afterwards. Aside from that Gibson L-50's are nice guitars. They're carved and not pressed like the L-48. Otherwise, one can always spring for more expensive in the Gibson line up. The old Epiphone (pre-gibson) archtops are fantastic, but they're pricey.

I'll try to post a pic of my Kalamazoo tonight. It's been great other than I let it dry out in my first college apartment and ended up with a massive humidity crack. It's been repaired, but there's a loose brace from a previous owner's blunder that plagues the instrument. And by plagues I mean... Have you ever played guitar under a ceiling fan? That's what the loose brace sounds like. It's like a built in tremolo.

I long for pre-Gibson Epis, but you're right, they're pricey. One of these days I'm gonna get an Epi Electar Zephyr 8-string lap steel.

I've been warned by players way better than me about pedal steels, ZB. I've been convinced not to even attempt it. I ain't smart enough for that machine!

Hey mkeller234 ! It's neat to see one of those in the flesh! - ( There seemed to be one in in every garage band - We used to walk around to check out the other bands making noisey in Joisey on Saturday afternoons.... Some were pretty good and some stunk on ice, but it was always fun! )

I've got no doubt you're right about that...They certainly look pretty damned complicated to play....I can't even play a B-bender properly let alone all those crazy bars and pedals on a proper Pedal Steel.

I just wanna try a simple cheapo model because I'm not the worst slide player in the world when I use a metal bar like they do for Pedal Steel. Give me a Corcidin bottle though and I'm totally useless.I've seen em on sale in Musicians Fiend for under 300 in the past.


In Highschool and College I was caretaker for a lady friend's Father's '70 Les Paul. It had that sweet Gold-Top metallic lookin finish...*****in guitar. Had to give it back about 5 years ago and I've only got a few pics of it....If I can dig em up I'd love to show it off. I freakin loved that axe.

This SG is an odd duck. It is painted a Fender color, Burgundy Mist and the head stock is stamped SEC (which I think means factory second)

I played in a band with a guitar player that played a REAL '58 Les Paul. He wouldn't play it in bars , but took it to festivals and such. Guys all the time coming up to him and telling him what a sweet '58 replica he had! He'd just grin and thank them. Remember, they are made to be played!

1957 vintage Karl with 1956 vintage Kay C-1. Yes, it's plywood(but it's MY plywood!), but that's a Brazilian Rosewood fretboard with matching tailpiece.

That's a nice bass! If you have any doubt about it, I'll show you mine, both the one I bought new in 1984 and the one I took out of a dumpster a few years ago.
