But he's got a perfectly good Chinese Ibanez, wired like a Les Paul, that I got out of a dumpster last year; or he can play my ancient parlor guitar, Gibson hummingbird, or pink paisley telecaster if he prefers; and he's got the electric bass I made while in grad school, my old double bass, my new dumpster bass (see above), and a mandolin... and that's just a partial listing. I don't think he's hurting for stringed instruments.

We had band practice at our guitar player's home for a change last night so I was able to shoot some pics of my early 1900's parlor guitar "The American." It stays at his house since he is much better player than me! (In exchange I get to keep his Ludwig Wendall Hall banjo ukulele at my house) Maybe these will be bigger pictures?

I'll have to get a better picture of this one... my first 'good' guitar, Gibson Hummingbird I bought new in 1982. It has BGN stamped on the back of the headstock by the serial number; otherwise I could never have afforded it. The problem proved to be the bracing of the top, which wasn't fitted and glued right. When I had all that redone in Munich in 1985, the tone of the guitar changed radically, and the volume seemed to double. Later, the original pseudo-tortoiseshell pickguard started to warp and buzz, so I copied it in wood, with a little marquetry hummingbird.

^ Wow how cool is that! I should play the thing more often. It's not the greatest tone machine but man o man that sucker is loud. Yours looks to be in descent shape too. I had to reset the neck on mine and refret it.

Have not seen any Jags here yet, so thought I would post mine.

Found it as parts in a box when I was about fourteen. It had really wonky wireing(worse than the usual)and had a bunch of extra stuff, has R&D written in the cavity and on the back of the neck where it bolts onto the body. Its a 64, pretty sure.

Has to be tuned before every song, and sometimes during.

If you're having those kinds of tuning problems, I'd probably get a new set of tuners (if that's where the problem lies, sounds like it does). Keep the old ones around and make sure the new ones will line up with the holes. Makes your old guitar functional while keeping the potential for making it original again. If you have to tune between every song you've got a slightly over-glorified guitar shaped object on your hands.

Guess I should have said that when you wail on the wammy bar it goes out. Yeah, the tuners are not in top condition, but they have life in them. Most of the old fenders with that bridge were a pain to keep tuned. I might consider some new pickups and tuners, but right now, for an object it does get played a bit as is.
What I really need is to find some tuners for Dads old guild he got new as a kid. It needs em bad.

Old tremolo systems like that can have a lot of static friction, causing the strings to bind and slip. If you can't address that effectively then figure a way to block the trem. (My Strat has a block of rosewood jammed in there and they're not even particularly susceptible to tuning problems)

If it wasn't vintage you might consider going to an indexed whammy bar. Oh wait, for a minute I thought this was about bikes. Nevermind.

Actually you're right-on Jim... The proprietary "locking trem" systems (Eg; Kahler, Floyd Rose) on newer guitars are the indexed shifters/brifters of the guitar world.

That's not really a whammy bar to be wailed on. Most vibratos are only meant for a half step move at most. People always complain about bigsbys going out of tune, it's because they're being moved more than they're intended. This could be the root of the problem.

I doubt its worth much. It was painted with a cream housepaint, brushed no less. I finished it that color a long time ago. The electronics are really a mess, it was like they were mucking about with things, but they let the really stupid guys at it. Took me forever to get it to work, and thats only in a couple settings. and the pickguard is not original.
I mostly use it to play punk surf music. Sometimes I have a piece of foam on the muffler plate, but leave it out when its not being played cause its so ugly.

Yeah, that is true, but when I first learned to play walk dont run at fifteen, that thing was fun! And if I could not play like Van Halen or those big hair guys, then I could sure dress like them and beat hell out of my tremelos(tho I had a generic strat for that stuff).

That Jaguar is sweet.
I haven't opened up one of those for a long time, but Fender trem's suffer with weak springs, but they can be adjusted inside, and bring them back to balance.
You're right, they aren't really for jerking on.

Check out this wang bar. Clamps right on the strings. How can you go wrong with that?
