Ultimate Aesthetics
A fun game for the week since it's been slow.
Build the ultimate beautiful Frankenstein... Here are the rules: 1. Function doesn't count. This is for beauty ONLY. 2. The parts DO have to all work together. 3. Any era for any part is possible, but it has to be able to work together. Modifications are allowed to make it fit. 4. You must use a MINIMUM of 3 distinct groups...you can't just drop on an entire c-record group. The idea is to combine things. 5. NO ICS or things that are modified by others. NO DRILLIUM, unless it was offered stock. 6. You must select everything visual...frame/fork optional...as are parts you can't see. |

This thread is useless without pics. Seriously.
It's a great idea but its ultimate extension should be an actual build. J |
I wish I had the cash and parts bin for that! It requires a little imagination, but I can understand that it might not be fun for everyone.

Thanks Aaron, I think this a pretty cool thought exercize...If I hit the lottery I'll put it into motion
Mine is intended to be built (most ideally) on a Bates Cantiflex frame with Diadrant Forks like this but more tastefully painted http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=199357

Function actually counts in my case. This is a usable, purpose-built bike. 2. Everything was chosen to work very well together. 3. Everything works together, and parts were modified to fit: fenders modified, taillight modified, front rack modified, BB modified... heck, the frame itself was modified. 4.
5. I did all the mods myself 6. I selected everything Does this qualify? http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5230/...8050849f_b.jpg |
Here's a frankenbike that I hope to have some day:
1) Mercian Vincitore Frame (plans of ordering one always come so close but never to fruition. ahh... someday) 2) Centaur Alloy 10 speed Drive Train (Got it) 3) Centaur 10 speed Flat Bar Brake Levers/Controls 4) NOS Record Crankset (Got it) 5) NOS Titan Ultra Stem (Got it) 6) Lauterwasser Bars - Not Soma (Got it) 7) Butchered Brown Leather Brooks B17N 8) Cork Grips 9) Son Schmidt Dyno Front Hub 10) Schmidt E6 Headlights 11) Custom Front Rack with Headlight Mounts 12) Cream Schwalbe Tires |

Or my wife's Soma mixte (parts span 1984-2011):

This bike started out all Super Record, but has evolved over the years. My old legs no longer appreciated the 53/42 chainrings on the Super Record crank, so a Zeus 2000 with 48/36 chainrings has replaced it (factory drillium and Ti bottom bracket, of course). The Superleggero pedals were replaced by Look-made Campagnolo clipless pedals. The Record shifters were replaced by Simplex Retrofriction.

I think titanium is totally awesome. |
Sweetness!
I dont know how to post pics yet... I have a '74 Fuji S10-S frame: Colour: BMW Monaco Blue w/ chrome forks. Bright Yellow bar tape & cable housing Derailleur front/rear: '68 Campy Valentino w/ down-bar shifters Hubs: '50s Gnutti Brakes: Dia Compe center pulls Rims: vintage 27" Ambrosio Tires: Kenda 27x1-1/8" Bars: Nitto Olympiade 114 Saddle: Bontrager |
I like this idea. I don't have any good pics, but here's how my Riv is built up:
'96 Rivendell Road frame and fork, light blue Headset: Stronglight roller-bearing (forget the model) Brake calipers: Dura-Ace 1st-generation, black Brake levers: Campagnolo C-Record Aero (white hoods which don't really go with the rest of the bike...) Derailleurs: Suntour Cyclone, black Shifters: Suntour Superbe pro (six-speed index in friction/power-ratchet mode) Wheels: Bullseye hubs / Mavic rims (Module-E front, MA-2 rear) Bars: Nitto 104 Stem: Nitto Dynamic Crank: Nervar Star Pedals: Avocet plastic "aero" platforms, black (I think they're model III) Seatpost: Suntour Superbe Saddle: Brooks B-17 I'm in the process of doing some re-configuring, though I'm the king of Not Getting Things Done lately. I have some Dia-Compe Aero levers with gum hood that will look good on there, I think, and probably fenders. Might also try an old 49D crank I have but the left arm is shot. Want to put fenders on it too - silver aluminum, of course. I guess the theme is blue and silver with black accents. |
