It won't get sticky in the rain. Two or three coats and once it's dry (after a few hours) it will be good for at least 10K miles, at which point you may or may not want to add another coat of shellac.

Agreed. The varnish will hold up forever, just giving it an occassional touchup coat as the top surface wears down - plus, it will continue to look great that whole time, unlike modern wraps that begin to show their age after just a few miles. Water resistant as heck, too.

Shellac stands up nicely in the rain. You probably already know this, but just in case ... make sure that you use shellac, which is different from most varnishes in the store.

Good catch on my slip of the tongue (or fingers as the case happens to be!) I typed "varnish" for some reason, but please use shellac.

And, there's clear shellac and amber shellac. Use clear if you want to retain more of the original color of the wrap......obviously. But, work it in thinner layers in either case. Let one dry before adding the next coat. It's a pain....kinda....but, otherwise, the shellac seems to cloud up. That happened to me on my first wrapping job, anyway.

Oh, and the clear will darken whatever color you use, so take that into account picking the color of wrap.

And just to keep the waters completely murky, there is also shellac in a can, like you get from Lowe's, and shellac flakes - which need to be dissolved - like the product available from VO. This latter is, by far, the better product for handlebar wrap.

I read about that a few years ago. I couldn't get the flakes locally, so I just got the can.

It becomes an off-white. How far "off" depends on the shellac used and the number of coats applied.

Twine? I read on another topic here, elkhide? Is this normal, is there a "let's see what we can wrap the bars in" contest? Maybe I should try frogskin, like the seats of the Franay Bentley. Or palm leaves...
