Bertoni ID help, please!
A few months ago I discovered a neglected Bertoni in the storage area of my apartment building. As far as I can tell it was probably a) abandoned by a vacating tenant, b) the property of one of the elderly residents who passed away in the last few years or c) inherited by somebody who cares not for the velo culture.
Here is a link to the photos: http://www.flickr.com/photos/6241633...ream/lightbox/ I've already read everything available on Sheldon Brown. A local bike aficionado said the components are Campagnolo Super Record. It looks kind of like this one: http://www.wooljersey.com/gallery/v/...g+pg3.jpg.html Thoughts? |
Looks like all Super Record to me. The bike probably dates from right around '81-'82. Don't know the model name, but it looks like it wants to be rescued.. :)

Amazing bike.
If you like that sort of thing.. You found it a few months ago and it's still sitting there? |
It's a shared storage area, as most apartments are. Talk to the super of the building if you want to be up front about acquiring it. The newish tires rule out belonging to an elderly person, most people wouldn't leave behind such a valued ride. Probably belongs to someone in the building fitting the last guess.
There appears to be a bunch of bikes stored there. But I'd be concerned about just taking it justified by wishful thinking. |
I should clarify.
The bike has been sitting in the same spot for the 2 years I've lived in this building - untouched long enough for a thick coat of dust to accumulate over the entire thing. It was only a few months ago I realized it was a Bertoni (my interest in vintage steel frames is recent). Next week they are relocating the entire rack to a different area, so we'll see if anybody bothers to move it when the building manager posts the notice. In any case I posted signs over a month ago asking the owner to e-mail if he/she is interested in parting with it, and if not, to please move it because it is hogging space active cyclists need to lock their bikes. (Seriously, it's like the mall at Christmas) No responses so far. No movement. I also let the building manager know I would be happy to take the bike if nobody claims it during the move. I'll even pay them a few bucks if they'll put it towards a community bike stand. The point of the thread was to see if anybody could guess the model/year of the bike. So far my best guess is an 87 or 88 Professionale based on a few catalog scans I've seen, but the fork isn't chrome plated, so I could be wrong. Maybe it's a stock setup. Maybe they upgraded the components at the time of purchase. Maybe it's painted (including the fork). Maybe a hipster molested it. No idea. |
No help, but I hope you score it. Any other neglected treasures in there?
|
Chuckk, that thing looks quite similar. Where is that photo from?
|
Then best of luck, hope you successfully acquire it.
|
Did you ever pick this up?

I have, what I think is, an 1987 Bertoni Italimerica - based on a catalog link provided by a BF member - maybe it was you? If so, thanks! My Bert definitely has B pantographs - was just curious what "nested" means. Thanks! |
Long delay but I never did pick the Bertoni. After 3 years in the same spot it mysteriously moved on the day of basement contruction. The management was bizarre - they wouldn't give me a straight answer so I think the contractors just yanked the lock loose and moved it so they could get started that morning.
Oh well. Shame. |
