Peugeot Super Competition

So, as I had mentioned in this thread, I had a line on a Peugeot Super Competition…I was having trouble connecting with the seller, and thought for sure someone had bought it…sent him a note over the weekend and come to find he still has the bike…was able to make it to his house tonight to pick it up…he just had new tires installed on it. It’s in very solid shape…in dire need of a wash and wax. Seller bought it used in the ‘80s and had lost interest in it over the years.

Paint is like a pearl white finish…it has Mafic rims, Simplex derailuers, Stonglight headset, Reynolds 531 frame/fork. The seller had a gel cover over the saddle, as I was leaving, he said, “Oh, there’s a leather saddle underneath the cover, but the cover is so much more comfortable…” I removed the cover to reveal a Concur Supercorsa in excellent shape.

Here are some quick pics I snapped down the street from the sellers before I lost the light. Suggestions on bar tape color?

Thanks!

I know...it's like it's crying out in pain with them like that...and I have a feeling they've been that way for some time...:)

Nice bike and I agree with the black handlebar tape suggestion.

I found a Super Competition last year but it lacked the correct fork set. Lucky for me, I found the fork set yesterday, still attached to a bike, I might add. But the frame set on the bike is pooched, leaving the forks set orphaned. Lucky I was there to complete the adoption...

I always thought that a frame is a frame and a fork is a fork and a frameset is a frame and fork. Am I wrong?

Not in my book. A single frame and a single fork comprise a frameset.

I dont know....in my mind a a 'frameset' is a frame with orignal corresponding fork.

That makes sense to me. I can get on board with that.

It's very early here, but I'm not understanding how your definition is different from mine

Please explain.

I have a soft spot for the Super Competition and yours looks like it will clean up nice!

I am in agreement with you. You posed the question, "Am I wrong". My original post was my answer.

Pretty good question? What does make up a frame set? What makes up a fork set? Is a frame set both?

I suggested that the frame set (tubes, lugs, drops, braze-ons) is pooched. I said that because of this...
http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=201351

And, that horrible rust decay is repeated on the top tube, obliterating one of the brake cable guide braze-on all together.

The fork set (crown, drops, blades and steering stem) is just fine, although I have not measured it for straight yet.

So, in my vernacular, the frame set is pooched and the fork set is OK.

Grand Bois 05-10-11 08:38 AM

I told you it's early. I think I'll go get a cup of coffee now.

A 'tubeset' plus lugs etc = 'a frame'
'Fork legs' plus a crown etc = 'a fork'

Could anyone comment on these brakes....I don't think I've ever heard of them before...would they have been orginial to the bike? Thanks!

Those are the Spidel version of Mafac LS sidepull brakes. Pretty much the best stuff to come out from Mafac IMO.
I am very familair with the brakes as I have it on my 84 Peugeot PSV and my 85 Vitus Plus Carbone 7 as you see in this pic of my Carbone right after I finished building it up about a year ago:

You seem to have the earlier version of the Spidels as the lettering and general finish indicates. The later ones have a slightly better finish and graphics and had the added micro adjust wheel at the quick release. They look very much like Modolos, but I think the Mafac/Spidel LS are actually an earlier but better (stiffer, stouter arm/pivot design) design. Those should clean up to a nice brakeset that you can be proud of to have on your high line Peugeot. The Spidel brand was considered some of the best 80's French stuff as it put together the best from different French manufacturers (Mafac, Stronglight, Simplex. Mavic stayed out of the deal for some reason, maybe because they saw a "sinking ship" already) in an attempt to save the French component industry and compete directly with the Japanese and Italian companies.....but alas, it was too late and Spidel had to close shop before any gains were realized.
The Spidel LS brakesets are starting to go up in value out there and it's getting harder and harder to find them but there seem to be at least a couple of NOS brakesets that do come up for sale every year. I would not heistate getting them if I have a chance again. They are really good brakes IMO, could be the best sidepull the French made in the 80's.

+1

That's the way I see it too.

Nice bike! That's one heck of a spoke protector!

auchencrow 05-10-11 06:48 PM

Spidel seems to ring a bell...

Whoa... Isn't that a PY10 - not a PX10?

Chombi 05-10-11 06:50 PM

You also have the best ever Simplex RD on that bike, the 6600SLJ Aerodynamic!
I'm feeling very envious!
That looks like a 56 or 54CM? Tell me if you ever consider selling it!

I believe the Super Competition came as a frameset with the owner or lbs determining the build. Mine came with the identical Spidel brake set and Spidel pedals with Christophe clips. I believe the Spidel 'brand' was a consortium of major French producers supplying product for marketing and distribution under the Spidel umbrella in the late 70s and early 80's.

That appears to be a PXN10LE Super Competition which was a production bike. You must be thinking of the CFX10 Super Competition frameset that was built at the Peugeot Special Workshop.

Thanks to everyone for this information...! Would the serial number help determine what year/model the bike is?
