Btw, what front rack is that you have?
Thanks! My first road bike was a vintage Trek so I've always had a soft spot for them. The front rack is made by SOMA: https://store.somafab.com/somialfrra.html

It's pretty much an exact copy of the old Blackburn front racks that are getting harder & harder to find

Old TREK for $125.00

I have been looking for a nice old TREK for years, and I finally found this one. The front wheel is missing, but otherwise it appears to be all original. (Except for the aero bars, of course!) Even the National 700c x 32c rear tire matches the TREK OE specs. It appears to have been ridden a few hundred miles and then stored in a coal cellar for thirty years. Then boy racer got hold of it and mounted the aero bars. Thank heaven he got bored and gave it away before turning it into a fixie!

Frame: Reynolds 531 double butted
Fork: Reynolds 531
Crankset: Sugino AT 50-45-28
Bottom Bracket: Cinelli
Front Deraileur: Huret
Rear Deraileur: Huret
Levers: Suntour Barcon
Freewheel: Suntour 6 speed
Dropouts: Campagnolo
Chain: Sedis
Brakes: Dia Compe 450
Bar: Cinelli
Stem: Cinelli
Seatpost: SR Laprade
Saddle: Avocet Touring I
Pedals: SR SP11
Headset Tange Levin
Rear Hub: Suzue 125mm
Rear Rim: Rigida 700c x 22mm wide
Rear Tire: National 700c x 32c
Toe Clips: Christophe
Toe Straps: Christophe
Bottle Cages: Blackburn
Rear Rack: Blackburn

Catalog Page: https://www.vintage-trek.com/images/trek/Trek3pg8.jpg

I was surprised that the rear hub and dropouts were spaced to 125mm. I thought TREK was using 120mm dropouts until 1983 or later.

Wow, nice score Watchbird. Those GC centerpulls are absolutely lovely. Did you check with the seller to see if the front rack was lying about?

Nice! That's a 1st generation 720; the Cinelli bottom bracket shell was only used for about a year (some actually had "TREK" cast into them where yours is "Cinelli") until the new cast shell with cast-in integral under-the-shell cable guides from Signicast were available.

I was surprised that the rear hub and dropouts were spaced to 125mm. I thought TREK was using 120mm dropouts until 1983 or later.
No; the change-over happened during the winter of 1981-82. I don't think we made any 720s with 120mm spacing.

The seller was totally clueless. Boy racer gave it to them to sell and they know less than nothing about bikes. Which is why I got a great deal and didn't ask questions. I'm pretty sure, though, that they didn't have the rack.

I just checked my parts bin and I have the same Blackburn front rack that is shown in the TREK brochure. I bought it about 1980 when I toured Europe on my PX-10. I think it belongs on the 728.

A funny thing about the rear rack on the TREK. It is mounted to the INSIDE of the bosses, so the chain can't shift onto the small cog. I'm pretty sure its been that way since new. Another reason I think the bike has been idle for most of it's life.

Sweet 720! A good clean up, some finned Scott Mathauser brake shoes and you'll have a killer rig!

Without really trying, I seem to be on my way to collecting the entire 1984 set (I don't ride them all, but I bought all of them right).

And a 420 project I picked up for $35 last weekend:

I think I'll outfit it with the first generation deore parts I have lying around (complete with oddball oversized pedal spindles):

Hey IthaDan, you're missing one... the illusive 460. Here is mine from way back... raced out with Salsa stem and Cinelli Tempo pursuit bars.

Here's my '84 520. Picked it up a couple of years ago great condition. I changed out the pedals and the saddle, added some fenders, and now I use it for touring and occasionally for commuting.

1980 610?

Just picked up this one today from the original owner, based on his account and serial number starting with an N, it's a 600 series from somewhere between 1979-1981. The paint is near flawless with 1 small rust spot. It has mostly Suntour components and Reynolds 531 tubing, the Strong Seatpost and Flite saddle were not original.

Nice score Vonruden! Even the head badge looks to be in good shape. Trek did not believe in extra braze on items yet at that point did they? Maybe you can install stylish chrome cable clamps for the top tube. I don't know a lot about that model, but that bike seems to look just right to me.

Thanks! Great idea, the current ones are plastic Dia-comps that are pretty loose.

That is snazzy! I think Trek started to move to glued on head badges instead of screwed on about 1980. Looks like yours is glued, so probably an 80-81. Nice score; glad it is not my size.

Had a little rain today so it was a great day to ride.

Also salvaged some brooks tape off another bike and got it on. Love this bike.

I recently found one of these '83 Trek 640's and have been riding it to work for the last two weeks. Boy, do I like it; I never thought I could commute on a Campagnolo 42-52 double, but with this bike it's possible! Picture is up the thread in case you missed it. Mine must be like, super uber rare, since it doesn't have the red headtube Guess it just got passed over during painting.

Too funny. There is an '83 640 for sale here in San Diego. Couldn't get approval from the boss to get it...

Nice looking one you have there.
