All these photos of beautiful early í80s Treks make me miss my 614. I hope to collect another one (or something similar) one of these days.

However, I do still have my 1991 2100 (non-drive side photo, sorry). I have some NOS Shimano bar-end shifters that Iíll put on soon, along with new bar tape and tires.



I rehabilitated my wifeís 1100 a couple of years ago. Itís also a í91.

This is my older brother's bike. He bought it new in 92 or 93 when he was stationed at San Diego Naval Base. It's pretty much original shape cept for the rear derailleur. Hasn't been ridden in probably 15 years...

katzenfinch: I am curious what you especially liked about the 614. I'd never known they existed before I picked one up off CL recently.

85 660. I have a 9 speed cassette on there now and a Shimano 105 triple. Still using the original Suntour Superbe friction down tube shifters.

My 84 520. Wheels are rebuilt with original rims and Suntour cartridge bearing hubs. No more helicomatics. Taking it on it's first ride since I bought it, today. The bar wrap is used, to test out the stem and bars. I may end up with a slightly shorter stem, and maybe even different bars too. I will know in a few hours if it will work as is. Then, I will try to find this wrap again, and rewrap it.,,,,BD







I did trim the rack mount rods. It doesn't have the tire probes anymore, .

My 614 (which after a green respray became known as “The Trek formerly known as Red”) replaced the Schwinn Varsity that I had been riding for the previous decade or so, and it was like going from a pickup truck to a sports car. It was quick and responsive, and did everything I wanted it to do — commutes, fast recreational rides, loaded tours. I even found some 27" x 1 1/4" knobbies for it and took it off-road, though the frame was really a little too flexy for that and the knobs rubbed some paint off of the inside of the chainstays. I eventually switched to 700c wheels, but kept the Suntour Cyclone II derailleurs, which I think were brilliantly designed. I think the early 1980s Trek seat tube logos are the coolest ones they ever made, too.

One thing to know about your 614: The fork crown problem often mentioned in this forum is a real thing. One of the forks broke off in my mechanic’s hand when he was preparing my bike for a tour. It was covered by Trek’s lifetime frame warranty, but I sure am glad it didn’t happen while I was on the road.

One thing I am not clear on (from the other thread re the poll on fork failure): Were the problems only with the forks that had 'Trek' inscribed on the crown? Did your 614 fork have that?

'87 520 Cirrus near completion. Received it last year and only as a frame and fork, original paint. Minor chips but no dings. West coaster, no rust and clean inside the tubes. Not after a restoration or build to OEM spec, but rather a mix components both earlier and later than original. Remaining is the rigging and brake pads. Later on will be the thru frame lighting wires and light system. Both gen and batt. will be used.

Odds and ends collected and donated to the cause. In general, 700x35c on Ukai wide rims, frame left stock but a wider axle to fit a Mega-range cogset to 34t. Hubs are Sunshine with big balls in the rear. LBS had a brand new long axle in his junk pale... schweet. Suntour Cyclone front and rear derailleurs. SR Apex with triple. Bar end shifters are ratchet Schwinn, made by Suntour. Dual platform Shimano SPD M323 pedals, chrome caged.

SR forged stem. SR Road champ bars. Early Dura-Ace micro adjust and fluted seat post. San Marco 312x saddle in suede for now but if the right Cambium comes along, will give it a try. Found some nice Spenco grips on another bar, a challenge to remove but now on this ride. Plans are to use them under another type of wrap.

Fitted are tight hugging Paceline mudguards. I think they look sharp and match the paint perfect. Weird because the center grey is actually a reflector so my phone cam flash makes it look ugly! The fenders light up white at night with headlamps on them.
Unknown brand rear rack thats been mildly modded to fit, lower CG. Might be a Minoura / Blackburn copy. Plans are for a front Tubus lowrider.

Dia-compe short version of the 980 cantilevers (thanks Goldenboy!). Not sure yet how this will all work but will pull with Gran /Aero-compe levers via those forgotten and neat Suntour Power Hangers (front and rear). Far more time in fitting, tweaking and mods than originally planned.

As it sits with some accessories, weight is exactly 27 lbs. The saddle and pedals are beastly heavy but weight is not a priority in this Truk. Sorry for the poor phone pics. Link to more. https://flic.kr/s/aHskryLDsd

Just saved this 84 510 from the clutches of a pawn shop in the wrong end of town. It's only a 19" frame, but I'll shine it up and put a good price on it at the local bike swap. Pretty heavy, but very very smooth riding.

At Sedgemop's urging...

Here's my 'mystery year' 2300. The 'ZX' designation appeared in the catalog for '95, but this doesn't appear to have been a cataloged color combo through to the end of ABT frames. It came to me NOS with the black Stronglight locking collar headset, and it accretes parts slowly as it waits.

I have a 1985 Trek 600(52cm I think) in "as new" condition. It was given to me by the original owner who only rode it a couple of times before injuring his back. It then hung in his rafters when he discovered my passion for vintage steel road bikes. I put the bike on my stand and thoroughly cleaned and detailed the bike. It is a blue color that is in great condition. The bike is ALL original and, unfortunately too small for me. I rode it with the seat post up and it is a sweet ride, very quick and responsive. I took it to Trek bikes of Ventura and they were blown away . They told me it was top of the line for that year. I would be interested in a trade for a taller Trek of similar quality. I ride a 59 or taller bike, I might consider a 58 depending on the bike. Obviously someone in Southern California not too far from Ventura County. Joe

I put fresh tires on it this weekend and centered the spindle so the inner chainring won't rub. It might be finished now. I was considering yellow bar tape, but my daughter talked me out of it.

The in progress pics of my '79 930. Replaced the incorrect seattube decal with the correct style, albeit with custom colors.


Since this will be my Cino machine for this year, I added a drillium triple and Rallye long cage.


Pretty much putting lipstick on a pig, as the paint is pretty tired. It's a 10 footer for sure. Don't care, it rides like a dream.


When the bars come in, I'll have everything except tires to complete this thing. The plan is for 30's or 32's, but it'll ride on the old 23's until I make a decision.

Here is my 1980 412. All original except for the hoods, bar tape, tires, brake pads, and wheels due to a catastrophic blowout that mushroomed the rear Rigida.

Fully restored before the blowout
