I'm guessing he swapped the original 27" wheels for 700c, like I did, which gives you extra tire room.

Yep, had to ditch the Helicomatic nonsense and the 27" wheels.

There is definitely enough room for the 35s, but fenders would not work with them. I have this suspicion that if I dimpled the chainstays a bit, I could probably fit 38s....

Otherwise, I really love the Compass 35mm tires. I ran the 32s (stampede pass) last year on a Raleigh Gran Sport, and I don't think they were nearly as plush as the 35s. I'm running them around 50/55 psi (rider+bike = ~200lbs) and that seems fine. Could probably go lower.

Yeah, I've been running them around 35. Super. Absolutely Super.

It came stock with the 28-45-50 AT rings, but I subbed in a 46t for the 45 because the steps were a bit more even with the Sachs 7 speed freewheel I'm using.

Here's the math.

There's something really satisfying about getting that half-step JUST right...

I'll give the lower pressure a try. I'm only a bit wary of dropping the pressure on the rear wheel too much, b/c in the past its felt a little squirmy on turns and it scared me off.

Tires are Zaffiro Rubino's in 32mm size. I may change out the first gen Cyclone stuff for MKII, as I think it shifts just a little bit better.

No, I had 3, . Now I'm just down to 2 but I should sell my paint challenged one.

Last year was a heck of a year. I picked up 2 720s (a 1982 and a 1983), a 1978 TX 900, a 1979 510, a 1984 610, and a 1993 950 all on the local CL (or within a reasonable drive). It was a bumper crop of vintage Treks last year in Iowa, .

Back when it was raining 720s? . I only remembered you having 2. ("only 2 720s...").

Do you have emotional attachment to that one? That's the 'cross country' bike, correct? Are those the wheels that went with nesteel's bike?

I did ride the paint challenged on across the country. I just need to get my act together and start selling some bikes. I sold the frame only. I picked it up locally as a complete bike and sold the frame.

I remembered the Specialized hubs- and know that Super Champion labels seem to come off when you don't want them to.

I need to do the same thing as well... I went as far as asking for some values on the bikes I don't ride so much... but wussed out. It's always that thing of "when am I ever going to run into an 84 Stumpjumper again?"

We could always swap some bikes and pretend that way that we actually thinned the herd,

Thought I'd ask here. What is the factory rear spacing on a 1982-84 trek 610? Did it come with a 5 or 6 speed freewheel? I'm looking to buy a new wheels and want to make sure I get the correct rear spacing

Looks like all the 81-84 Trek 610/600 bikes came with a 6 speed.

So it's going to be at least 126- IIRC, they spaced those bikes at 128- it'll work with 126 or 130 without setting the frame.

A seven speed half-step is hard to achieve, especially with a non-customizable FE. Not bad, but a couple of real close spacings in there. I did a 44-40 x 11-13-16-19-23-28-34 (customized cassette). Not perfect, but works for me, as I expect yours does for you.

Play with tire pressures, if you've gone squirmy before, be sure to go higher than that. I would think at 35mm, you're already pretty close to ideal pressures. Maybe 50/45 at the lowest.

Freshly built up, and freshly swapped out of a 140mm 3TTT quill stem and Highway One bars is this 130mm stem (with quill conversion). Both the stem and new bars are Ritchey WCS (bars are Classics). Warm weather riding is more conducive to being stretched out over a bike (barely longer than my norm, but still in the zone), so it's not as spot on as I'd like. I will swap 31.8mm clamp compact bars out on it soon as it will alleviate a few things, but for now, the two words that come to mind when I see this thing's stance is: Turbo Jet

One owner '85 720. Headset, brake levers and saddle only non-original parts. Saddle is a nice Ideale, so thats okay, and I have a set of matching Shimano non-aero levers in the stash.

Still has the original racks and matching bottle holders. Owner dragged it everywhere with him, including Japan.

Thank you for the kind words. It is a 1982 ( I think) Trek 610. Reynolds 531, suntour shifting, etc. The tires are a very standard 27 x 1 1/4'' Panaracer Pasela. I just rode them 12 miles on gravel and it felt great!

Maybe an '81 610 with that color and decals? I have an '84 610; it is an excellent bike as well, I'm running 700 x 32c tires on it so more or less the same as yours.
