1985 Trek 560

Here's a 1985 Trek 560 I put back together over the last few months.



I always seem to forget to take a "before" picture, but it was pretty wrecked. All parts and consumables were original except for the tires, and it was missing the rear mech. But I had a Cyclone from that era, so that was an easy fix.



The paint's in decent shape with some chips and rust ripples, but pretty solid from 10 feet away. The derailleur hanger was pretty bent. I straightened it using the "check alignment with another wheel, threading the axle into the hanger" hackjob. It works well enough for friction!



One of the front mech's adjuster screws was seized and stripped, so I had to drill it out. Now it's just harder to tune up, but again, works well enough for friction. I tie-dyed some Newbaums, which turned out better than I expected. We'll see how colorfast it is, but I did take the extra step to pre-soak in soda ash, so I have high hopes. The hoods are Rustines made for Campagnolo brakes, which fit well enough. They sure feel amazing, though.



The wheels are the weakest link in the rebuild - the eyelets are rusty and there's some pitting one the front cones. But I think I like the worn-in look. It certainly doesn't feel worn out, it is super speedy and full of pep. I took it for a 20 mile spin yesterday, and if it weren't for the San Marco Laser saddle I felt like it wanted to keep going. I think I'd have to be half my size to find that saddle comfortable.

Tape looks really cool. What brake levers are those hoods fitting well? I've never had much luck with aftermarket hoods.

Very nice! Great work on the '85 Trek 560. Those frame/decal colors Trek came up with in the 80's really pop.

They're early 80's Suntour Cyclone levers. It's not perfect if you're looking closely at it, but it works just fine. I think Rustines are probably worth it on any lever, close fit or not. I am very impressed with the feel.

Filing this away for future use...

I've used the Cane Creek and had some vintage DiaCompe hoods... I've been satisfied with them- but if there's better... always something to play with!

Looks fantastic! And the kicker, for me at least, is all that Cyclone in one place. The RD is in beautiful shape (so often they are ground up. ), and those cranks are sublime. Did not know about the brake lever hoods, but they do look good, and heck, Cyclone levers? Why not?!?

While looking for something else,

Found this, 1977 Trek TX900, purchased from the original owner, with all the braze-ons, outfitted as per the old Trek brochure, with the exception of the saddle, and rims. One repaint by Trek, in a later color. Frame fits, didn't think it would, but have to change out stem, it's 140mm, before any ride beyond around the block, never been a fan of the brooks saddle, so that's gonna go too. Was looking for 770 or 760, didn't even know this existed, saw the eBay ad, only an hour away, bike basically perfect, couldn't pass it up. Kudos to the previous owner for his outstanding stewardship, very knowledgeable, and a great guy to deal with. Tim

You got me beat, as I wasn't aware of any of it. According to the brochures on the vintage Trek site though, that seat clamp design was from day 1 on the TX900, not so on the other models. Tim

I have been riding my 88 Trek 400 for about a month now. I have had to switch out saddles that worked but not with this bike. I put the San Marco Rolls on and the bike became. Unfortunately it has turned into something too nice for winter salt riding.

Thanks Mountaindave, it is a repaint, but purchased and ridden by a bike shop mechanic. Not Imron, by then even Trek had stopped using it. Still damn nice paint job, can't wait to put some miles on it. Owner ordered all the braze-ons, and said Mike Appel built the frame, course he probably built most of the early frames. I just think it's neat to have a Trek built in the original red barn. Tim

Here is my 1984 Trek 560. I replaced the black headset with a chrome one to match the fork. I also replaced the Dia Compe Aeros which were black with alumninum finish ones.

Never done it with MS but I've never figured out how to do it with Google Drive either. I used to use Photobucket but after their fiasco I switched over to postimage.org which is free and works well - for now at least.

If you want larger images to show click the share button on the pic in Postimage, click the 'direct link' icon to copy the URL, then here when composing a reply click the Insert Image icon and paste the URL you got from postimage. Found my only photo of the old Trek 510 frameset I bought used many years ago before I sandblasted it. After the blasting I had numerous braze-ons done; bosses for levers, two bottle cages, rack and lowriders, and cantilevers. Then rattlecanned with Titanium Krylon from Lowe's.

I stumbled across an older Trek Antelope. The guy wanted $75. I haggled him down to $50. It didn't look that. I thought... It looks similar to yours.
