Ooops, totally forgot you visited Doug's shop when he had my frame in for coating. Who would of thought you'd stumble across the same exact frame (to the year) just a few months later.

Anyway, congrats again on the great score and best of luck removing the seat post. I think RJ the Bike Guy made a few videos detailing different techniques recently. I didn't have a need at that time so didn't end up watching them but for the most part he does have some useful tips.

As far as the serial number goes, of the 4 vintage TREKs I've owned I've found anomalies on two of them. Although they produced some beautiful frames during that time their priority was definitely not on the serial stamping process.

+1 I have a lovely ‘79 710 but the frame came out of the shop out of true - slightly twisted according to a builder who cheked it out for me. Still love the bike though.

Hi - I had a frame with a stuck post. Gunnar RockHound. I dissolved it with lye after unsuccessfully using a MAPP-air torch. I was not worried about the paint.
Some heat is generated from the lye - aluminum reaction, but I don't know if it's enough to damage the paint. Not sure about the rest of the chemical reaction. It's definitely an outdoor project if you do it.

I've been trolling craigslist for vintage treks for what seems like months... Lucked out with this purple beauty! 1985 Trek 560. Looks to be all original aside from cable housing and tires!! Frame is actually in really decent shape aside from normal wear and tear, plus scrapes. The purple is AWESOME! I really like the color scheme.

I have a 1981 Trek 6xx frame that I thought about component switching with this guy but I'm going to ride it around for a month and then decide. A definite steal at $100!

To be fair... that SN doesn't look like it was put on by Trek- it's not in the same format that Trek used, it's not in the same font that Trek used, it's backwards from the way Trek did it and it looks like the BB was covered in some sort of metal filler and the number stamped into it...

My apologies GB; I assumed that anybody reading "big auction site" would know I was talking about eBay. No secrets there! In fact I was a bit surprised that no one else even responded they had seen that particular listing (eBay item 323204202955) when I posted the pictures here.

I don't understand the concept of not saying "eBay." They'll say "Trek" or "Campagnolo" or "Shimano" or "Niagara Cycle" or "PB Bikes" or whatever brand names, trademarks or businesses... but then say "the auction site."

This ranks among my best Trek finds yet - I got this 82' 614 and a '85 400 for a nice low sum. They're both the same size - and my size to boot. Each bike had flat bars and mountain bike brake levers. I asked the seller if she knew where the original handlebars were, so later that night she called her Grandma, who had them both down in the basement in the "Donate to Goodwill" pile. She was going to take them to Goodwill the next day - I got them just in time!





If the 614 rides as nice as it looks, it's going in the keeper fleet - I don't have a dedicated touring bike...yet.

Wanted to introduce myself to the thread! Currently riding on a ‘83 braze/‘85 paint/decals 760. Loaded up with mostly Nuovo Record (SR derailleurs). I’ll throw some pictures up as soon as I post some more!

You have one of those too? Looking forward to pix of it- Someone else here has a 760 with goofy specs/paint. Figure it was an expensive bike/frame- it may have not sold and got painted and sold later on a sale- OR a factory repair/repaint.

The latest incarnation of my '82 614, now well on it's way to becoming a proper randonnuering bike.







It could use some mid-fork braze-ons (if I dare tamper with an "Ishiwata death fork" :O) and another set of bottle bosses -- maybe in the fall. For now, it makes a fine commuter.

I’ve never heard of an ishiwata death fork. Viscount, yes, but not steel Ishiwata forks.
