Can you see a solid color underneath the flakes? A Sold color as in primer. If you only see the shimmery metallic color, then it didnít get any primer and could also be the reason the paint is falling off so clean.


as far as down tube shifters.. Try installing some Suntour barcon bar end shifters. To me, They do make riding a huge difference compared to down tube shifting.
What's underneath is a dull, dark gray - I don't know if that's the primer or not. The fellow I got this from had it stored in a shed with a limestone floor. The rear tubular tire was shot and so the rim was in contact with the floor and it simply corroded the rim to bits. I tried to remove the freewheel from the Campy high flange hub and the rear rim literally crumbled under the pressure. So much for using those hubs, I sold 'em cheap on eBay. Anyway, I don't know if being around limestone did something to the paint, but I'm thinking it's a strong possibility.

I have some barcons I can use but I wanted to try the power rachet shifters first - they are, uh, different. I've only used them for one ride so far.

Yeah, I'm thinking I'll take the Campy brakes off and use some Suntour on it instead, seems to fit it better. Maybe a Brooks saddle too. I want to make sure I'm keeping it though, first, before pumping more money into it. I've made that mistake before many a time.

I agree with this assessment. Since the very early ones are somewhat uncommon, I had in mind that they might have custom-type qualities, but they're just good all-around, everyday bikes. Nothing at all wrong with that.

I have a 1978 514 the exact same color. I bought mine new and still own it. The 1977 and early 1978 Treks had a serious paint problem and I think it was worse on some colors. I guess they used the wrong primer with the Imron paint? I had to send my frame back to the factory in 1979 because it started to flake just like yours. They covered it on warranty. They did a full repaint and I never had problems after that. Mine is 100% original and I will take some pictures and post it when I get a chance.

I bought it in Portland OR and very few even knew about Trek at the time. I was going to College, and did not have the coin to buy what I really wanted (probably some Italian bike) but the salesman said they were really impressed with these Trek frames. They were not that much more than a Centurian or similar and much less than a similar Italian or French bike. I was really impressed with the bike and the Suntour group but within just a few weeks the paint would peel from even a small nick. Since this was the dealerís first experience with the line, at first he thought I was abusing it but when he contacted Trek they told him about the problem and to ship it back.

By the time my frame was returned I know the dealer had several more to send back. Must have been tough dealing with this for a new company but they stood behind their product. The second paint job on the bike was beautiful and has lasted very, very well.

Pictures of my 1978 514 I bought new. I had never heard of Trek back in 1978 but it seemed like a fine bike and the salesman was very impressed with them. The 514 was the best bike I could afford at the time. It turned out to be an awesome bike and got much use during 4 years of college.

That 514 is beautiful! Love the paint color, which, looks to me like they graced the eventual 1980 412/414 (410 frameset) with, of which I have said frameset, albeit with much less perfect paint. Man, perfect paint on an old Trek. Metallic flake FTW.

^^^^^ Three, actually. 414 for southeast, 608 for south central/west, 715 for the whole north. 262 has since been added, for the sprawl outside Milwaukee.

There was a Trek 715 BITD, IIRC. But never a 608. A 608 would have to be a 600 series with a very high end gruppo.

I'm nowhere near old enough to remember this- apparently I must've used to sit around and read the phone book at my grandparents' house... But I seem to remember seeing the maps of 414 covering most of the state- it looks like 608 was implemented in 1955. (I do have one of my grandparents' 1956 telephones)

The Wikipedia entry says 262 was added in 1999... which is interesting because I remember my girlfriend lived in Germantown when I lived in Milwaukee in from like 1993-96 ... and I seem to remember the 262 area code coming in with a relation to calling her house.

I was never aware of area codes, period, until sometime in the 70s. I can't imagine anybody actually using them in the 50s. But then I come from rural, stay-at-home stock. At any rate, I'm very much looking forward to riding the 414. The 930 continues to blow me away with each and every ride. Is it the SL? Could be. And so I'm anxious to try 022, as a bookend.
