1978 Trek 710. Currently have it setup with Dura-Ace derailleurs, Old Campy downtube friction shifters, semi-aero tubular wheelset (that I built), 7-speed cassette, Shimano 600 brakes and crankset. Brooks B17n saddle, old Look pedals.

Hi, are these current production cantis? Can you give a few more details, sirclicksalot, about braking performance and ease of set up and compatibility with 700c conversion on what I assume is a frame with typically narrow (by today's standards) posts for 630 rims? I'd love to know of a current production canti that works well on these 80s tour bikes. I've read the current production cantis don't play well with these older bikes. Thanks!
I'm pretty sure I've featured my 1985 Trek 620 on this very thread before, but I just gave it the annual "full monty" service, plus finally decided to retire the old Deore XT "Deerhead" canti brakes for newer versions, because I'm finally old enough to realize that vintage cred ≠ hours of time spent fiddling with those sumbritches.
Anyway, here's George Sr. (father of Tobias, a 1986 Elance 400T that was the classic metallic blue but met an untimely left-hook end)

Hey guys, I am happy to report in this thread Picked up this trek 500 series frame and fork over the weekend. I cant seem to find the serial number that matches to vintage trek...unless I am reading it wrong. The serial is 002109. Here is a picture. Can anyone help identify. Thanks is advance :d

Here is my 1986 Trek 520. The Maillard Helicomatic hubs gave out after the first couple or three years, so I replaced the wheels with a new set from Wheelsmith shop in Palo Alto, CA. Also, I changed out the Biopace chainrings with standard round chainrings.

I totally don't want to alarm you- but one thing to keep in mind about 81 and 82 600 series Treks- the forks can fail. Basically, what it comes down to is inspect your fork crown every once in a while.

It's going to be a great riding bike, chances are you'll never ever have a problem with it- just be aware it can happen, but it doesn't happen suddenly and catastrophically.

Clean and pretty.
Those are my favorite Trek decals- in that color scheme. The white letters, black outline and the gold "go fast" lines.

Took out my new to me Trek 500 on its maiden voyage today. It rode very well over the 25 miles and much faster than my two early 80's sport touring Trek's.
Only things I've changed so far are the tires and pedals and added two bottle cages. Probably going to swap the crank and wheels with something more period correct eventually.

I've been on a bit of a Trek buying spree lately. In one year, I picked up a 1978 TX 900, a 1979 510, a 1982 720, a 1983 720, a 1984 610, and a 1993 950. Whew, these bikes just sort of showed up and I couldn't resist. I'm thinking central IA is treklandia, .

1984 TREK 420 https://goo.gl/photos/7CSoyncDZavYT1zw8
~ got it for $80 on CraigsList. Completely stock, I believe. Including tires (yikes!).
I got carried away on making some updates & upgrades. Here's the grand total of changes made:
bike $80
CONTI tires $25
SERFAS TEGU $40
NITTO Technomic stem $30
used NITTO bars $25
Arendel cage $10
Jandd bag +
cork bar tape +
cables / housing +
brake pads +
Crank Bros platforms $180
RivBike Silver Shifter $85
~ anyway, I'm enjoying riding it. I've added some fenders from another bike. I'm not sure, if I will, but I'd like to switch it to 650b wheels. Another.... whole bunch of money...
cheers.

I've had all of the old TX's, except for the 900. I'm hoping one just shows up for me too. I think most of the midwest is old Treklandia. I imagine their oldest dealers were here. I sure see lots here in Chicago and Milwaukee.

I agree that much of the midwest is Treklandia. I'm fairly new to this part of the midwest (Des Moines) but I'm impressed with the number of old Treks that I see on a fairly regular basis.
