I'm loving this Thread! I'll get pics up soon.
Currently restoring a 1980 414 to original condition.
Also building an 84 500 frame set with donor shimano 600 from an 84 610 with a bent frame. Helicomatic and all.
For now my current ride is an 97 520 That my neighbor was throwing away. That one needed a lot of cleanup but turned out great. Pics to follow

Hey Tim-

That bike is sublime!!!

And "Stewardship" is a great word for those of us with these old bikes. I view the bike as the frame/fork- the parts are fluid. So to me, taking care of that frame is the big thing. I guess a real collector would frown up on changing anything from stock.

I put my Trek 520 back together with the 2x10 bits I had on a Univega Gran Turismo. I just like this frame's fit and ride more. I might not be able to get out for a long tour again for a while, but it's good to know that I've got a good bike ready to go.

Where is the date code located on a Antelope??? It's a 800 series. It's black w/ neon green and, blue lettering. It looks like someone went crazy w/ decals: Awsome, Oakley, Diamond Back... Is all that supposed to be on there??? A triple w/ 7 very rusty coggs, Shimano 100 GS shifters, front and, back derailleurs. I think it's all original even the dirt... Did I get had for $50????

Pics can help identifying a year (and of your Trek, not mine ) The 800 Antelopes were made for a number of years, but with Shimano 100GS I'd figure it's a '91 or '92. I'd say an 800 is alright deal for $50 if it's in decent shape.

My '81 710

This is a work in progress. CL find last week with a seller who is a BF member so that's cool. I pulled the parts off my tig welded Milwaukee Road and I only have 40 miles on it so far but I really like it. The paint is so shiny. Next step is to loose the Tektro levers for 1051 SLR when the hoods arrive and put on some Cinelli Criterium bars with Cinelli stem that have been in the bin for a while with 7900 DT shifters for the 6700 Derailleurs. As soon as I can wear out these Swalbes, I'm going to try out those Compass 32s everyone loves and put them on with my 6700 Open Pros. Lastly, I'm going to ask Santa for some Dia Compe GC610s and matching nonaero hoods. Then, I'll hunt for 7400 drive train pieces to go with my 7400 GL330 wheelset and put some fat tubbies on it. Of course, this plan is on pencil

Thanks, I agree the frame is everything, and if I was a collector, I would repaint the frame in the original slate blue, with the proper decals, source the arc en ciel rims, cinelli seat, and hang it on the wall. But I'm a rider, the bike is in great riding condition, so I'll just make it fit me. Also pretty obvious the frame was built for 27in rims, so just got a hold of some Super Champion Gentleman clinchers, which I will have built up. Can't wait to start putting some miles on it. Tim

Here's my 84 500 I bought like this. Building it up with Shimano 600 group and other parts from an original 84 610 that has a damaged frame.

And my 1980 414 in original condition. I have found the correct Laprade seatpost Avocet Condor seat, SR pedals. In progress

Yes. Quite the smooth rider over 140 relatively flat commuting miles. After some cockpit changes, I'll take it on a longer hillier ride.

I need to get a photo hosting site sorted, but...
I have an '84 610 that the PO updated the wheels to 600 hubs to match the rest of the group and get rid of the stock rear hub and it's reputation for trouble if not maintained. Forgive me for not recalling the original.
I like the ride of the 610 enough to keep an eye out for a sporty Trek and found an '87 560 Pro EX in the grey to black fade paint with smoke anodized Shimano 600 indexed components. While going over it I found a small top tube dent and an almost imperceptible flat spot on the down tube, just below the FDR. Both are minor and cosmetic, I don't even think the tubes are weakened, they're certainly dead straight still.
But when an '86 560 pro came up on Craig's in better cosmetic shape I "went to look at it" and brought it home.
No dents but it was used by someone whos sweat just rusts out bike steel. So there's bubbling around the three brake cable routers on the top tube and a big booger of rust where the frame mounted pumps handle flares out.
I took it home and the booger cleaned up to shiny steel, no rust hole, and I'm in the process of cleaning the rest of the rust off. I plan to do some touch up, but it's the red bike with yellow head tube and looks a bit McDonald's to me. So not to invested in that paint other than it protecting the frame.
So thems my Treks, I'll try to link pictures tomorrow!

Original is a Helicomatic. I still have the original that seems to be fine but we will see what happens as time passes.

finished the 84 500 and took it on its maiden voyage. first time it's been on the road in over 30 years!
Wow! This bike is fast. The 600 group married to this bike like 2 lovers.
The old helicomatic moved it along just fine.
I put big 1 3/8 tires on it to support my big butt.
vetta carrer seat is very comfortable.
Love it.
