I posted my 92 Trek 1200 earlier in the thread. Figured I would post my 1985 Trek 520 also.

Don't think I've ever posted this here as a built bike. It's my '82 950 frame built up with mostly Shimano 600.

I sold a 660 a couple weeks ago, and was wondering what my next Trek would be, and how long before I found one, well....that didn't take long

I don't think this warrants it's own post, so I'll put it here. This is a 1977 TX700 I picked up earlier this summer, and I'm still deciding what to do with it - keep it and get it repainted? Keep it and leave it as is? I know the ol' 'it's only original once' refrain comes to mind, but some of the paint is simply flaking off. It came with Campy NR that I partially removed for some Suntour Cyclone stuff I've been meaning to try (yes, I have much better tires I haven't installed yet). I'm still getting used to the long stays and stable 'low trail' geometry, to be honest. I'd like to use it as a light touring bike, but maybe it's too old for that, I dunno.
Very nice TX700 even with the flaking paint. I haven’t seen original imron paint flake off like that on these early Treks. Imron paint is only as good as the prep work that goes into these paint jobs. Must have been a bad batch of primer that didn’t stick. Weird that it’s flakng clean of the bare steel...
Can you see a solid color underneath the flakes? A Sold color as in primer. If you only see the shimmery metallic color, then it didn’t get any primer and could also be the reason the paint is falling off so clean.
as far as down tube shifters.. Try installing some Suntour barcon bar end shifters. To me, They do make riding a huge difference compared to down tube shifting.

I have a 1978 514 the exact same color. I bought mine new and still own it. The 1977 and early 1978 Treks had a serious paint problem and I think it was worse on some colors. I guess they used the wrong primer with the Imron paint? I had to send my frame back to the factory in 1979 because it started to flake just like yours. They covered it on warranty. They did a full repaint and I never had problems after that. Mine is 100% original and I will take some pictures and post it when I get a chance.

By the time my frame was returned I know the dealer had several more to send back. Must have been tough dealing with this for a new company but they stood behind their product. The second paint job on the bike was beautiful and has lasted very, very well.

Pictures of my 1978 514 I bought new. I had never heard of Trek back in 1978 but it seemed like a fine bike and the salesman was very impressed with them. The 514 was the best bike I could afford at the time. It turned out to be an awesome bike and got much use during 4 years of college.

It is an awesome bike! I have two (same color and everything) - one is with a friend and one is a "guest bike" for visitors not as tall as me.

That 514 is beautiful! Love the paint color, which, looks to me like they graced the eventual 1980 412/414 (410 frameset) with, of which I have said frameset, albeit with much less perfect paint. Man, perfect paint on an old Trek. Metallic flake FTW.

Is this the one with the Fond du Lac bike shop tag on it?

Just as a little "hmmm...." 414 was the area code for Trek back in those days. I seem to only remember 2 area codes for the whole state.

^^^^^ Three, actually. 414 for southeast, 608 for south central/west, 715 for the whole north. 262 has since been added, for the sprawl outside Milwaukee.
There was a Trek 715 BITD, IIRC. But never a 608. A 608 would have to be a 600 series with a very high end gruppo.

The Wikipedia entry says 262 was added in 1999... which is interesting because I remember my girlfriend lived in Germantown when I lived in Milwaukee in from like 1993-96 ... and I seem to remember the 262 area code coming in with a relation to calling her house.

I was never aware of area codes, period, until sometime in the 70s. I can't imagine anybody actually using them in the 50s. But then I come from rural, stay-at-home stock. At any rate, I'm very much looking forward to riding the 414. The 930 continues to blow me away with each and every ride. Is it the SL? Could be. And so I'm anxious to try 022, as a bookend.

I bought my first Trek yesterday, a 1988 400T. Pictures will have to wait until it stops raining. It looks as though it was hung upside-down by the wheels for 20 years, the bottom is covered with a thick layer of dust. Everything is original except the saddle and tires. The red paint looks good. There are a few chips, but they should be easy to touch up. All it needs is a thorough going over to clean and lube everything. I'll keep everything stock until I get a chance to ride it a bit and decide from there.

Saw a post on Facebook from a LBS selling this Trek as you see it with no wheelset. It dawns on me that I have a set of Centurion Araya gold anodized rims that may match the decals nicely in a dark corner of the basement. I'm not a huge fan of dark anodized in general (although in some cases they look great) and certainly wasn't a fan of the gold but as you can see from the picture, I may have found a place for them. Also showing a matrix dark anodized that I also had laying around. Already found a front deraileur. The paint is gorgeous
I think the gold wins ....... yes ?
