I have an SL that I bought around 1978. The serial # is 5671691 or at least that is what it looks like as it has surface rust, scratches and has been touched up with paint. I need to repaint it. Does anyone know where to get files that I can use to copy decals?

I just picked up an AD SL

Serial number : 5819772

Reynolds frame, Suntour components, Weinmann 610 Vainquer 999 center-pull caliper brakes

Dark blue w/ the goldish decals.

Am I correct in assuming it's a 1977? I haven't decided if I will keep or make her roadworthy and sell. I'm pretty new in the bike flipping scene but I do enjoy tinkering.

One piece of unsolicited advice, if I may: don't sell it until you are sure you really don't want it. These bikes are light, well-built and have an interesting geometry, which makes them good candidates for building up as a light touring bike (or randonneuse légère, for an extra $100 :)).

I've been giving some serious thought in keeping. Don't know if I would be doing an injustice by slapping some wider tires and turning into a "gravel" bike. There's a really nice gravel trail about 1.5 hours south of me. Or I can just keep her for cruising around the neighborhood and paved trails. Like you said, she is surprisingly lighter than what I would have assumed being an older bike.

Love it ! I just got my saddle, very similar to yours. I had a gold chain laying around for that "special bike flip" but I think I am going use it for this one =). Going with brown
leather look wraps on the drops with black hoods. Haven't decided yet on tires...whether to go cream , brown, gumwall.... so many choices !

Hi Dudes, I just officially joined the club. I picked this one up today via craigslist.

Bumping this thread with the serial # of the A-D Inter-10 that I picked up this summer. Not sure if any of the parts are original, but serial # is 5673800. That seems to correspond to the late 70s if there’s any sort of pattern to what’s reported in this thread and in that table on the CR site. Anyone have any breakthroughs on cracking that scheme?

I picked up a 24" Austro Daimler Puch
Vent Noir smoked chrome frame a few weeks back with only an after market headset.

Decals are pretty rough.

Fork is not original.

I see that you have been searching for your bikes information. any luck? I never found mine.

I haven't found out much.

One of the underside bottom bracket cable guides is partially obscuring the first portion of the serial number on mine but best I can tell it's very similar to wildwood's Vent Noir serial number.

Best guess is mine is 69 / 8460
and on the other side of BB has a 5 s 861.

Also mine has the Puch headbadge and Puch stamped at the top of the seat stays.

I wonder what year they went with the Puch added to the branding.

I had a Vent Noir II about a decade back that did not have Puch anywhere on the frame.

I just took a look at the Classic Rendezvous site's listed Austro Daimler Puch bikes and S/N's.

What I thought was a / on mine must be a 7 not stamped in fully.

That would make mine 6978460 best I can tell and there are 3 or 4 similar S/N's on that list apparently bought or had parts thought to be from 1981.

So, I'm thinking its a pretty good guess mine is a 1981 model. Whether 1981 or 1982 it's no big deal.

I noticed some of the older models had clamped TT cable guides.

Mine has brazed on cable guides plus the Puch head badge rather than an A/D headbadge.

As mentioned above mine also has Puch stamped at the top of the seat stays.

Pretty confident it's really a A-D frame isn't? Not sure about its model. Couldn't find any example of these dropouts. Can anyone give me a help?

The bike shop had no glue about the bike, and apparently it has been painted several times. I couldn't find any track of its serial number.
It's mounted as a single bike with a coaster brake from Czech Republic.

Any guess about how much it worth? Thanks in advance

I been enjoying my Vent Noir immensely since I picked up the frame a little over a year ago.

I've made some changes and have a few more planned.

Wildwood, your bike and mine must have been made during a fairly close time frame.

Best I can tell my SN is 6978460 then it has a separate stamping of 5 S 861.

You shared yours is 6978468 with the extra stamping of 5 S 863.

Mine also has the F and 14 stamped as yours does

Just a quick update on Puch Royal X no. 5637702, a 1976 one-year-only model in the U.S. The only catalog literature I've ever seen for this model was a fold-out with a poster on one side and multiple rows of photos with specs for the different models on the back. The original SR bars and stem were dated 12/75, while the SunTour Cyclone derailleurs were marked 10/75. The Royal X came in white as pictured here and in salmon color, and they're not common at all - the stock parts (1st gen Dura-Ace cranks, bottom bracket and headset, SunTour Cyclone front and rear derailleurs with Power Ratchet downtube shifters, Weinmann Carrera sidepulls, MKS pedals, Regina Oro 14-22 5-speed freewheel and chain, SR LaPrade seatpost, SR bars and stem, Gillux 3000 saddle) would have been better matched with different wheels than the stock Normandy Luxe Competition hubs laced to Weinmann 27-in rims and Semperit 27 x 1 1/4-in tires. Though, having said that, the wheels on this one (Normandy Luxe Comp laced to Mavic Module E 27s on 32 mm Paselas at 70 psi) roll shockingly well, fast and smoothly.

Changes on this one are the Brooks B17, KKT pedals, Nitto bars and stem and a SunTour Ultra Winner 13-28 freewheel. To accomodate the last bit, the SunTour Cyclone it now wears has a SunTour VXs to allow a greater than 24T cog.

During the same time frame, Puch used the same frameset for the Royal Force, which was silver with black accents and black 1st gen Dura-Ace components, including black high-flange hubs laced to tubular rims. I get the impression these sold for slightly less than a Vent Noir of the same period. The only braze-on fitting for the Puch Royals was a small pip to keep clamp-on down tube shifters from sliding. These were nicely mitered, silver-brazed frames, and ride accordingly.

This looks every bit an AD minus the badging...kug work, paintwork, etc...

Can't vouch for the accuracy of this tool. This bike has what appear to be the original wheels (Semperit tires made in Austria, Atom hubs, Weinmann rims) but the hubs are dated 03/79.

As you eluded to; accuracy? Quite the spread from yours to mine for the latest date to be a month difference. But it does tell me it’s older than I first thought (1980).

Greetings! Just picked up an AD-SL, serial number 5589211. Silver with black pinstripes and chrome lugs. I’ll be replacing the hoods, brake pads and tires, but the rest of the bike is in great condition (both thanks to being in Arizona).

Congrats on finding an AD that you like. If the bearing grease in the bottom bracket, headset, hubs and pedals hasn't been refreshed, the AZ heat might have cooked it. Don't ride it much without checking.

Ha! Yes, when I picked it up most of the driveline was covered with a nice layer of hardened yellow. Everything turned out surprisingly well - hardly any wear. The previous owner said it was only ridden a few hundred miles then stuck away in the garage. He only “rediscovered” it because he’s moving. I haven’t ridden it yet as I’d already heard crunchy bearings in the back.
