Turned some wood bar ends

I got a bunch of Lignum Vitae on sale and decided to make some bar ends. I'm going to do some with some sort of inlay next, these were just a test run. For the finish I just oiled them with Jojoba oil since Lignum Vitae is highly water resistant, I wanted to keep them organic, and Jojoba oil doesn't spoil. I'm working on some fenders too :thumb:

Very nice job! I love Lignum V. Very interesting wood. I have some nice, old billets of it that I'm not sure what to do with. This is clever!

gave the girlfriend some wood did ya?

sorry couldnt resist

Lol, when you do wood work for a living, you hear wood jokes every day and they never get old.

She has a honey Brooks saddle on the way and she's getting some cork bar tape.. I'm hoping they match the honey well.

Those are pretty sweet man! Id love to use a pair of those on one of my bikes(*hint hint)

marley mission 05-19-11 05:54 PM

It's always nice when you find that a girl's grips match her saddle.

Those are beautiful. I think they would make many bikes look better. Since you likely know about various types of wood and finishes, do you know if Jojoba oil would be good to use on an ebony fretboard? I have been thinking about using it on one of my guitars but haven't been sure if it is a good idea.

Damn, I wish I was the first.

Those look really nice. Better than wine corks!

Now that is COOL!
You may have created a market for yourself.

Nice Job! They're going to look great with the cork tape.

Chris_in_Miami 05-19-11 08:47 PM

Beautiful, but don't they add about 5lbs? :)

thook 05-19-11 09:12 PM

I'd always thought of hand carving some out of Bois d'Arc or Locust. Those are sweet!!!!!!!!!!

Great Idea - Went over to the kitchen drawer where I throw my Bulleit Bourbon® tops after the bottle is empty - They work and look good too... But not as good as yours for sure... THANKS

That is not an entirely terrible idea. I've got to believe there is a way to make that work.

Me, I'd finish the bars with a 4-strand Turk's-head knot at the end of the drops, done in thin leather thong. That'd look pretty sharp i think.

BigPolishJimmy 05-20-11 06:37 AM

Nice bar ends! and I like the idea of a Turk'ss-head knot at the end of the drops. I used to know how to tie those 30 or so years ago, maybe I can remember.

I'd like to know, how did you bore the hole in the cork? Not an easy procedure I would think.

They are sold that way. Any woodturning supply company sells them. You either use a dowel or turn down an area to fit the hole. They're used for bottle stoppers mostly.

Hmmm that made me think (dangerous): Handlebar flask.....

I've always been wary of putting anything on my fingerboard. I've removed oil build up from fingers and the like but never added anything intentionally. That said I have accidentally put meguiars mirror glaze number 7 on the fretboard of an electric. It looked ok other than turning white and looking a little chalky in spots that didn't get worn in. I think you're better off letting nature run its course and not oiling them.

Back on topic, those look nice. I wonder if one could make a bar end shifter by laminating some ipe, lignum vitae and ebony. It should be strong enough... I think.

That is a really cool idea. If anyone tries it, I want to see it.

Scott, nice job on the bar ends!

I made one bar end out of plain scrap wood (poplar?) and painted it to match the frame, because I had a bar end shifter on one side and wanted both handlebars to be the same length... but it hasn't held up well. I'll be doing it again.

Wild grape vine, if you can find big enough pieces, is a good wood for this kind of thing. Smells like wine, too!

himespau 05-20-11 08:11 AM

Cool looking. I think some shellacked bar tape would look perfect with that.
