Modern Bikes vs. Personal Taste

I really don't mean to come across as a "hater", but personally, I find a lot of today's modern bikes to be absolutely hideous.
Fat cranks, what look like oversize stemsets, and mostly, those horrendous paint and graphic schemes. My personal tastes run, of course, to the older classic streamlined look.

Just one man's opinion, FWIW.

I feel that the lines of classic bikes are more elegant, but I wouldn't mind a modern one...except for the colors..or should I say lack thereof. I was at the local crit races, and it was a showroom of black bikes with white outlined lettering. Yawn. I look around at the manufacturer sites, and it seems to be "pick the model, and this is the color you get" which sucks, if you like a color.

I was going to comment and opine, put decided I didn't see the point in doing so, thus saving everyone unnecessary effort.

+1...I also find I like a lot of shiny new CF components and newer tech when I'm riding my bike, as opposed to looking at it.

Bikes should have some chrome. Wheels should be shiny, or at least metallic. If the bike don't sparkle in the sun then it ain't a proper bike.

This is my big pet peeve right now too. Black rims, black hubs, black spokes, black spoke nipples, blackwall tires, and black hardware. These ugly black wheels are everywhere! This really makes an expensive bike look cheap. (And a cheap bike look cheaper)
I don't like all the huge gaudy graphics and stickers all over everything either (Especially on deep rims) but I can live with it if the bike has nice shiny components to distract from it.

+1 While most of my bikes are vintage (with modern drivetrains), the last addition to the fleet was a modern bike. I like them all.

I like old houses too. Here's the newest bike on the front porch of my 1934 rock cottage...

Just noticed the rims and spokes are not black, so I guess I am OK.

Do you drive a two tone car with lots of chrome on the bumpers and white sidewall tires? Times change.

Very nice. What model is that? I have a Quintana Roo Santo set up as a road bike.

Bikes: a heavy old steel Frankenbike Gitane, a cruiser (not something I'd buy for myself, but it was a gift, what can you do?), a Greg Lemond, a Specialized Stumpjumper(old, steel, fully rigid), and a Specialized Safire

I like both. I'll agree that there are some horrendous-looking modern bikes, and it's also hard to find a new road bike that doesn't come in black, white or red (or some combination thereof).

The dearth of bicycle color choices bothers me almost as much as the demise of colored interiors for cars. (When we were test-driving our 1988 Dodge Aries K wagon at the dealership, my 3-year-old elder son undermined my negotiating strategy by saying, "Buy this one, Papa -- I like the red interior." I subsequently factory-ordered a 1989 Dodge Spirit in white with a deep burgundy red interior, and that car always looked far more expensive than its $12.6K out-the-door total purchase price. For the past 15 years, new car interiors have been uniformly and boringly gray or black.)

Hmmmm I guess the moral of the story is: 20grit wins. His Gazelle has a chrome fork, black rims, black wall tires, titanium stem, carbon fiber ergo shifters, polished aluminum derailleurs, polished aluminum cranks and black leather covered toe clips. It's like I have everything everyone wants all on one bike.

It's ok. You can be jealous.

I'm sorry, these new threads are becoming a bit tiresome. Can we not just beat this dead horse in just one thread?

yes this day and age is fantastic, they charge you way more for products, and give you less options....

Bikes come in stock colors, and stock sizes, cars are pretty stock, unless you want to buy that brand new benz cause i'm sure you can still pic and match colors, but you have to give up an arm or a leg...

it's definately a win win situation........... for the manufacturers

in 50 or 60 years they'll probably just tell you what you're buying and they'll probably just take whatever they want out of your bank account to pay for it.
