Do You Love Orange Bikes as Much as I Do? 83 Trek 520 Mod and Restoration Project
I've had an old '83 Trek 520 sitting around that needed some TLC, so I sent it up to Matt Assenmacher for a little tweaking and a repaint. There were a couple of pea-sized dents under the down tube by the DT shifter braze on tab that needed repaired. I had Matt set the rear drops to 130, add 700C canti posts, DT shifter braze ons, and a hanger bracket for the rear canti. It's been repainted in a rich, bold orange with a liberal dose of pearl in the clear coat and it's flat-out gorgeous to me.
At 63cm it's a bit on the large size for me and a tall friend just happened by while I was unpacking the frame and fork and as soon as he saw it he called 'dibs, double-dibs, you have to sell it to me!!' I won't be building it up myself, but my friend is fairly beside himself scheming how it's going to look after he gets done with it.
As always, my photographic skills are not improving with age, but I hope you can see and appreciate Matt's work.

23skidoo,
fantastic. i would have gone for a little more pearl, but that's me.
my dream would be an old schwinn superior in pearl orange.
i have a project bike that needs some frame work. if i ever finish it, it is getting painted pearl orange.

Okay, that's it. I'm repainting the Centurion in orange. Orange and white, with violet striping on the lugs.

illwafer, I'm a terrible photographer and my photos don't show just how much pearl there is to the pearl. Seen in the light the entire surface shimmers with the pearl, adding lots of depth to the overall paint impression. If you look at the photos in the PB album, all those areas on the frame that show kind of fuzzy and lighter in the images is the pearl catching the sunshine and glowing. Don't know if it's my camera or my limited skills, but I just couldn't capture good images in full sun due to the pearl.

Yup, still jonesin' for a Holdsworth, Merckx, Team Champion or other iconic orange steed. This Trek looks outstanding.

Very cool! My daily rider is a Trek like that (500 tri series 1985), not orange but original blue. I love love love those bikes. Fenders fit, triples fit, fat tires fit...

My poor teaching assistant friend confessed he just couldn't swing the purchase price any time this summer, so he's released his double-dibs and I'll be posting it in the FS forum later today.
