That would be my daughter, the youngest. I have failed to impart to her strongly enough that such behavior is extremely rude. I guess it's her way of ignoring her older brothers.

As for Bianchigirl's suggestion that this is an age thing -- I agree. Us "mature" BF members likely didn't grow up with earbuds in our ears, like our kids did.

I don't own an iPod nor an MP3 player, nor do I wish to, so no, I do not listen to music while riding, other than what is stuck in my head. I too have been saved more than once by hearing trouble approaching before I saw it. And I also like hearing birdsong, wind through the trees, and so on.

Not for me. I grew up without portable audio, but was glad to get my iPod. It was nice to easily get rid of the filler tracks and be able to easily listen to what I wanted. I also tend to think too much so music distracts me from my thoughts at these times.

That said, I use a single ear bud that sits just in the ear (no sound deadening) only when riding alone. I feel it's inconsiderate when riding with others to do that. The music takes my mind off the efforts of the hills, but I can still hear things around me. Mostly punk or rock with punk influences. Ramones, Jack White (in some form or other) Green Day, etc. The ride of the trip doesn't influence my musical decision.

Like Robbie I listen to the sound of tubulars on pavement.
That said I've also had In A Gadda Da Vida running through my head since 1968

I don't tend to listen while riding, but my MP3s are primarily C&V... Either classic rock, traditional country or classical.

Aside from the classical, some of my favorites are Pink Floyd, Jethro Tull, Stevie Ray Vaughan, The Guess Who, Who, Harry Nillson (sp), Hank Williams... and many more

Not to come off holier-than-thou , I do sometimes listen to my music way too loud in my truck. Not the safest approach perhaps, but I can't help it. I grew up with guitar-centric rock and roll.

I don't feel safe riding around with ear buds. My wife asked me not to do so and I agree with her reasoning. That said, sometimes I'll go to a nearby park and ride around listening to the Cards game after dark. There are seldom any other bikes or cars and I'm riding at a relaxed pace. Thank you, dynohub!

My wife has to send me a text when I'm wrenching in the basement if she's going to get my attention as I have the earbuds in and either the Cardinals game or music blasting. If I have the phone on vibrate only and don't feel it she'll come down there waving her hands and stomping as she'll often startle me and get the loud, "WTF!! What? You're just sneaking up on me?! What do you want?!" treatment.

Lately I've been listening to "Goat's Head Soup", some Ryan Bingham and Charles Bradley. I also listen to a lot of archived live stuff with the Wolfgang's Vault app.

Wonder what the responses would be like if this question was asked in the Road forum. I suppose I could search because I'm sure it has been... but nah.

I don't listen to music while riding. It would be nice but I use my ears as much as my eyes for danger signs. Actually my ears are probably more important in that regard. When talking with non bike people I often say 'I have eyes in the back of my head'. I'm referring to my ears.

So you listened to it twice, eh?

I prefer to have all my senses active on a ride. There are certain risks out there and I like to be aware to the fullest extent possible, as Robbie conveyed more poetically per usual. I do make an exception for rollers, otherwise I can last about 5 minutes. Then it's anything from Dexter Gordon to the Ramones.

never never have anything plugged into your ear while riding!!! you need 100 percent hearing while rideing. its easy enough to get in an accident with all your facillities working, let alone, hindering them with ear phones. however....while on my trainer its beatles beatles beatles-the only music i listen to-while on the bike. i like the different speeds of the music and set my cadence to that. again, i hate to see guys with ear plugs in while they are riding on the road-death wish? hey...listen to nature around you and cars coming at you!!

Yeah, bad idea.

A guy on our Saturday group ride was always listening to podcasts even though we always advised against it. One day he missed hearing "on your left" from another rider, crashed hard into rocks, broke his helmet and wrist, cracked two ribs and scraped his face pretty bad. He's just now coming back to riding after a few months. Without the iPod thankfully.

I do love my iPod and my iTunes. I have 3, and about 200 gigs of music on my computer. But not on a bicycle.

I crank the tunes in my car. Its too loud for the speakers but its not too loud for me

On the bike though I think headphones/earbuds are dangerous.
I've been considering one of those handlebar mounted speaker systems though, because I do have the desire to hear tunes while I ride occasionally....I just don't wanna drown out my surroundings.

I listen to poker podcasts, either "The Final Table" or ESPNs poker show (I forget the name of it). If those have been listened to, then I go to various investment podcasts, starting with the "Index Investors Show" with Ron Delege, Dave Ramsey show, Pimco's Bill Gross show. That's usually enough...

This is for either my workout route or off road bike trails. Anything with traffic and the iPod gets parked.

yah, and saw it performed live at The Electric Factory in Philladelphia, but I don't recall too much
of that particular show.
Steve Kahn is pretty good while on the trainer, or Al Di Meola's early stuff when I'm trying to set a
crazy pace.

On hot, sunny, summer days when I fly along the beach bike path, I listen to U2, Joshua Tree. Sometimes I even sing out loud (but not too loud).
"... but I stiiiilllll, haven't found, what I'm looking fooorrrr."

U2, JOSHUA TREE
Where the Streets Have No Name
I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For
With or Without You
Bullet the Blue Sky
Running to Stand Still
Red Hill Mining Town
In God's Country
Trip Through Your Wires
One Tree Hill
Exit
Mothers of the Disappeared

I have this on a cassette tape recorded from the vinyl album. What's this iPod of which you speak?

For late night rides, how about some Motown favorites or perhaps the sound track from The Big Chill?

And now, presenting the bike that flies: my 1975 Bob Jackson

This thread was not intended to espouse personal opinions on the virtues of wearing or not wearing headphones, earbugs or the good, bad and the ugly of listening to music while riding your bike. This morning I rode along the Beautiful Chicago's Lake Front to Hyde Park and all along the way I noticed that most of the people riding were tune to their music. The condenses of type of riders were, racers, recreational, casual, just to name a few and that was over 90%! My question was "What music do you listen to on your Ipod or MP3 while riding solo?" and a picture of your bike to correspond to your music. For example:

My Earphones and list of music

There's another thread created with the same idea, also.

Haha, since there's another thread now, I don't feel so bad saying this. I intentionally read the title of this thread and didn't even click on it because my immediate thought was "There are so many reasons you shouldn't listen to music while you ride!" and figured I'd just skip the thread all together and let you guys have your fun and post some music. Then I realized when I saw the title of your other thread that I must not have been the only one. I'm kinda glad you made the other thread so that I could get to say this and you've still got a thread to do your music thing in. Good luck and even if you don't want to just enjoy riding the bike, at least keep the music from being too loud so as to try to not get yourself hurt. Be safe.

..... well, actually, I started the other thread so folks could mention their favorite music while NOT riding their bikes. But this, of course, is a highly personal choice. Like wearing a helmet or not. I say go for it.

May be more of a function of where you ride/live instead of age. On average I see 2 - 3 cars on my 23 mile loop. Is it safer to ride without headphones - of course. I've elected to use them but am also constantly surveying my surroundings, looking for cars front and back and keep the volume low. In fact, people I have ridden with have commented on how frequently I look back for traffic. I know a lot of people don't agree with it - but it works for me. When I'm in the hills there's absolutely nobody else around - maybe an occasional mountain bike rider or horseback rider and you can't hear them coming.

I should add that if I'm in town or with other riders I have no music playing.

Judas Priest, Metalica, Ted Nugent, Allman Brothers, Stepenwolf, Guns 'n Roses...same stuff I listened to as a kid...wouldn't have minded having an MP3 player back then...sure beats cassette tapes! I do notice that Ted Nugent's Cat Scratch Fever causes me to excellerate my cadence!
