1980's Univega Maxima Sport problem

Hey guys,
I'm living in DC this summer and was unable to bring my bike out, so I picked up a cheap Univega Maxima Sport, via craigslist. The bike is in decent enough shape for a commuter bike, but I bought it without a seatpost. And from what I've read, '80s Univega maxima's have a non-standard seatpost size (26.5mm), thanks to Sheldon Brown. But I'm hoping this is not the case.
I've looked around extensively around the internet and have come to you guys for help. I've used this forum for a resource over the past few years, but I can't find any precedent in this matter.
I haven't measured the seatpost because I don't have any tools to measure it and I don't want to deal with LBS non-sense/fees. If anyone has a Univega from this era and can enlighten me as to what size the seatpost is, I will be in your debt for years.

Thanks guys, I appreciate any help you can give.

Go to Harbor Freight & buy a cheap Vernier caliper. Comes in handy. I had a Univega Via Carisma that had a weird size seat post. Found it at the local swap meet.

Buy a 26.6 and use some sand paper, 200 grit then 400 grit the 600 or 800 grit, polish. seat post is 26.5, use a flat piece of wood for backing.

Hmm, ok. I was thinking something along the lines of the sandpaper solution, but I wasn't sure if that would be frowned upon here. Has anyone done that? And if so, how effective was it?

Thanks for the input so far, I really appreciate it!

Measure first, then do the work if necessary. +1 $2 HF calipers work fine, and a decent bike shop would probably measure for free.
