Question on 1980 Schwinn World Tourist restore

I recently purchased a 1980 Schwinn World Tourist off CraigsList. My girlfriend wanted a vintage style comfort bike and she liked this one. It is in OK shape. I've never tried restoring a bike before and looked forward to the project. I have the bike mostly disassembled at this point with the exception of the crank. The problem I'm running into now is that it uses the Shimano Positron shift system which apparently requires special cables. Both of the shift cables on the bike were frayed when purchased so I just cut them off. Now I'm seeing that these cables are expensive and hard to come by. The bike has the Shimano FF system and is a 10 speed. So what are my options here? Should I just replace the rear cassette / derailleur / and shifters? If so any suggestions for replacement parts? I'd like to maintain the vintage look if possible.

You can often find Positron cables on Ebay.

But, if it were me, I'd dump the whole system and replace it with Suntour or Shimano components of the same vintage.

I have one with the front freewheel, and just changed the shifters to regular friction with thumb shifters, keeping the FF system. it works fine. So you don't have to change out to much.

I personaly like the FF system, You can shift it while walking the bike, or lift the rear tire a bit and spin the crank and shift in place after a panic stop.

Thanks for the replies.

shipwreck, which thumb shifters did you use? Is it possible to use normal shifter cables with the stock derailleurs if all I change is the shifters?
