dura ace 7400 derailleur pulley wheels

I've got a Dura Ace 7400 6-speed RD. The top pulley wheel is metal, the other is plastic. Can the plastic one be substituted with another metal one, or does the plastic one serve a specific purpose in being plastic?

The upper pulley on the 7400 derailleur requires some lateral float for the indexing to work properly. It is not interchangeable with the lower pulley, although it is possible that a modern upper pulley with lateral float might work.
