Yard Sale find .. Nishiki "The Aero" shimano 600AX = 75.00$
My latest yard sale find . it is a sweet looking Nishiki Aero that needs some TLC but everything is solid... can anyone give me a idea what quality this bike is and any info on Shimano 600 AX components?
Thanks Pinch

Man that is nice looking ive got-to admit, strange it was just sort of a fad at the time.
Something doesnt look quite right about the rear derailleur though in the photo. Chain too short, or the tension is ruined on it?

yes, tres coolio! Got the Tange aero tubeset and complete 600AX including the Dynadrive pedals (might be a PITA) and aero stem (the other PITA will be brakepads for those calipers). What a score for $75!

They looked cool, but the racers of the time called them "death brakes". Apparently they did not function as good as they looked.
Sheldon archived the 1982 Shimano dealer catalog. They had cool looking stuff: https://www.sheldonbrown.com/shimano1982/

I could tell you, but then I'd have to kill you.
Actually, any spares would be 25 years old by now. You could keep a lookout on Ebay, but you'll still pay a premium. Has anyone has tried shaving down a Kool-Stop insert to fit the calipers?
FWIW: I looked, and this popped up: https://cgi.ebay.com/290541203058 . That's a leetle over-priced, but I think Pinch scored nevertheless.

whoo, that's pricey!
Yes, I'd try hand-cutting some "cartridge pads" to try fit those calipers, but not sure what to start with. Kool Stops are good pads, but not sure what shape will be close to the Shimano profile.
BTW: I have a NOS 600 AX FD if you (or anybody) needs one...it requires a strange cable routing, so I never used it (forgive the shameless plug and PM me)

one of the catalog pages shows a little something ("one-key hex release", it says), but IIRC the cap on the top allows access to both an Allen bolt for the quill (down) as well as another one for the handlebar clamp (forward).

One key release IIRC is a reference to their crankset bolt...no crank remover needed.
+1 on removing the cap on the stem. Then you can reach in with a hex key to a recessed bar clamp.
