It would provide a lot of information if you let us know what year you got it...

My first bike was a 5-speed Stingray and I loved, loved, loved that bike.

When I was 15 my Stingray frame broke terminally. Got it for Christmas when I was 6. A used rental from the local park. Threw all the parts away. Everything was worn out with the exception of the rear coaster hub. Wish I'd saved it.

One of my favorite bikes of all times. No other bike since has been loved like that one. I understand yer pain, kid. Sorry.

The serial number was A23817. Still remember that. What year was mine?

if i were you i would let that one go and save your money and buy a real schwinn sting-ray, one thats made in the 1964 1/2 - 1975, thats when the were real good! i used to be real into collecting them a few years back, i used to ride them all the time, way nicer than the stuff they make today! you can look for one like you had when you are going through your "im going to turn 30 crisis!

If it had a shock in the front, that sounds like one of the 'krates or lemons maybe? Page through the catelogs on re-cycle. Here is a link to the 1969 one, but you can replace the year with any you want.

thanks so much...imstarting to think the fork was aftermarket because it had 20 inch rims on both side and same tires not like the usual one in the back for like the 1968

the only schwinn stingray they made in black was the fastback, so yours was not original paint if it was a cantilever frame. what makes you so sure that it was made between 64-74?

the krate series had a 16 inch front wheel, on the 5 speed stik-shift models they had an atom front drum brake on front, the coaster models didnt have a front brake. there were deluxe stingrays that had factory spring fork in the front with 20 inch wheels.

I know it doesn't help the OP, but I found my bike .. it was a 1978ish Schwinn Hurricane. Seems pricey for 1978!

That would have been less than 5 years ago-
I'm willing to bet it was a Walmart "black Friday" (day before x-mas sale) bike (S/S Krate replica)
They turn up on ebay all the time new in the box, go for around 200 bucks sometimes.
