Why are these wheels so FUNKY?
I bought a set of beautiful Campagnolo Montreal 76's laced to 600 Tricolor (front) and Mavic (rear), both so smooth, complete with red nipples too....but they're so funky!
It was my impression that ETRTO 622 meant 700c. I also looked on Velobase to confirm that these rims came in 700c. When I compared them to my 700c tires, they're tiny! http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5153/...ea9372f6_z.jpg http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5189/...1f22bfa2_z.jpg I put them on my Competition and the 600 brakes don't even reach. I can now clear the top-tube comfortably though: http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5106/...d4c61e52_z.jpg My questions: 1. Why are the wheels so small? What tires will fit? 2. What are these ugly skewers? http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5312/...f3fb637d_z.jpg 3. Will the 8-speed Sachs+Mavic hub snap at the axle? http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5071/...0eb00f5b_z.jpg 4. Most importantly, what should I do with these wheels? |
those skewers are AWESOME

Can't help you but I'm interested in hearing more about them as well. Those skewers are crazy.

was that bike set up for 27's originally? aside from that i'm not much help

I wonder if the rims were cut down and re-rolled to a new diameter?
|
Most likely mislabeled at the factory. Looks like 650's.
|
unless the picture shown is misleading, i would have to say the rims are mislabled. if you can scare up a 650c tire (571mm bsd) it may work, or if you can't find one, you should be able to scare up a mountain bike tire (559mm bsd) even if it is way too wide you can still determine whether it is the right diameter. but considering the 13.something width of the rim, it is probably more likely designed for a 650c (571mm) tire.
if you got a deal on them, now you know why (ha) you could just measure the diameter of the rim, if it's approximately 575 or thereabouts you'll have your answer. |

missed it by THAT much... |
Rebuild the hubs to some 700c rims I guess, probably wanna use a 7 speed freewheel and not the 8.. maybe you will need a shorter axle if doing that, I dont know? Oh and finally mail me the skewers, they are Cool!!
|
BTW,
if (1) you want to sell the rims. and 2) they are in fact 571mm rims, and 3) they are true, and 4) they have 28 holes, and 5) you don't want a fortune for them let me know... |

Knock-offs? They dont look like other Montreals I've seen.
And a quote from the auction ad: I believe they are 650C-equivalent wheels (my 700C tires are too big for these wheels). |
Sounds to me like they are cut down 700c to make a smaller (26" or maybe 650) 28 hole wheel. Keith Bontrager made a name for himself in MTB circles in the mid 80s when he cut down Mavic MA2 40 hole tandem rims to make 32 hole 26" MTB rims.

the spoke tension is too high and the wheels and squeezed to a smaller diameter
I agree with them 650c I suspect incorrect decals were applied at some point. what is the spoke count? I rather like them though I think radial front wheels are great looking. |

I'd be glad to swap your skewers for something more mundane, if you wish.

Absolutely correct, but the brake calipers still won't reach the rims.
