Umm... Sapim XRays are $2.50 each...Sapim makes a full range of spokes. The already mentioned site does indeed have Sapims for .25-.85:

Sapims are great spokes but they cost almost twice as much and you gain very little in weight savings. Sapims spokes cost around $2.50 each not 25 cents, you may find them a tad cheaper doing a web search looking for the lowest price, but those prices are an average. The DT Competition are about a $1 each with nipples, again doing some searching will turn up lower prices.

I've never used Sapims but I have three bikes with the DT's and their a great spoke.

Also Wheelsmith makes a great spoke, they have the same dble butted spoke that DT makes and Wheelsmith cost 79 cents. These spokes must be pretty good because one of the best wheel builders in the world swears by them and builds all of his wheels with these and I have a set built by this guy with those spokes and they work great. That guy is Peter White; see: http://www.peterwhitecycles.com/ Do the Wheelsmith spokes work better then DT? Probably the same, I can't tell the difference.

And don't use alloy nipples to save a tad of weight, the alloy won't last as long as brass when you put the spoke tool on it to adjust the rim. Brass also stronger.

I saw that web site, but all the other web sites show prices much higher which leads me to think that that particular site is bogus...but feel free to send them your money. Also those are cheaper 14 gauge STEEL spokes, not the double butted bladed stainless steel spoke thus your wheel weight will increase dramatically and you may have rust issues. That sites standard stainless Sapim spokes sell for .85 cents each. All of their spokes (and their entire web site is devoted to BMX bikes) are also shorter BMX style spokes which helps keep the prices lower.

Wow, lotta hate on Dan's!

Anybody who wants to can investigate whether or not they're legit, and whether or not they've been the biggest BMX mailorder place in the world since at least the late '90s. Just check out a back issue of BMX Plus! from your local library. *rollseyes*

I don't know anything about BMX, so you could be right about Dan's, but those spoke prices are for short spokes for BMX, cheap steel etc, not even close to road bike quality I was talking about; and that was the issue.

+1 to Lee's spokes. Fast and the price can't be beat.

I'm not sure if Lee is a He or a She. Lee is one of those names...

Anyone know for sure? I've only dealt with Lee in Emails so it could go either way IMHO. Who really cares? The spokes are awesome. I wouldn't think of buying spokes anywhere else.

I ordered 295 and 300mm, double butted for $.40 a spoke with brass nipples. They seem good quality to me.

The link I saw says "Stainless". So at .40 each you get a stainless spoke, plus nipple. Doesn't say "steel". Also says most lengths. Haven't tried it yet, but I have had good luck with standard Sapim spokes in the past.

I'd love to know what brand his spokes are. I've used him a few times and have no complaints.

Also the only girls I've known with that name spelled it "Leigh"

Or "Leah", although that is sometimes pronounced "Lee-uh".

The last 14/15/14 spokes I ordered from Lee were branded "Sapim" near the elbow. I believe he says he uses either DT Swiss, Sapim or the other big brand. I think I recall him writing in an email that he considers them all pretty much equal and unless you specifically request one or the other he just sends what he has at the time.

As you know I deal with this particular fine individual through email like you say, rather than use PayBay. I like to be a bit formal in business letters and always send a letter with my order so it is easy at the other end to see exactly what I want and who is asking.

Most business letters start out with a personal salutation to the owner or business contact -but I feel weird starting out a block letter with "Dear sir or madame" when it is someone I have dealt with a number of times. After about a half dozen wheel builds with these spokes I feel I have an excellent business relationship but don't even know how to start out a letter here ;)

buldogge 06-27-11 06:22 PM

I'm not sure what your malfunction is in this case...but...they are standard DB Sapim 'Race' SS 14/15/14 up to 300mm in length (as Keith already pointed out).

Pay more if you want to...

FWIW...I just abused a A23/Chorus rear wheel I built with these (DS), including a hard flat, on 15+ miles of gravel road over the weekend.

My last 2c.

My mother's name was Lee, short for Leona. ;)

As far as the spoke conversation goes, this is great information for me since I'm soon rebuilding the wheels on my Schwinn Collegiate. Because of information shared by pastorbobnlnh [obligatory shoutout, bro] I know a way to get a valid spoke measurement cheaply and without buying special tools.

Don't trust the numbers in Spocalc for ERD.. They are all over the place and the database is so old it isn't funny.

I don't have a lot of money and am curious what you guys think are the best value in terms of spokes and nipples. I don't want something cheap that will easily break or weigh a ton but i don't want to break the bank either.

Recommendations?

Thanks

I purchased Sapim 14/15/14 spokes from Dan's for a 650B wheelset. Retailers for DT and Wheelsmith didn't have single spoke options in 271mm, Dan's did. I liked being able to talk to a live person and have stock availability verified at the same time, plus the product was/is a good value.

Thanks for all the great comments on my spokes. For the record, I'm a dude. Please let me know if I can ever help with spoke needs.

I've used this online calculator for the last Four wheels I've built. The spoke lengths have been perfect.

Indeed, I've purchased spokes from you for at least 4 projects now and they're always perfect length and count. Is it possible to get spoke washers from you? I build a lot of SA steel flange hubs.

Welcome Lee to the asylum. BikeForums can be a great place. There are few subforums where a thick skin is sometimes necessary -like "the 41" (Road bike forum) and t Bike Mechanics. Classic & Vintage is usually pretty civilized.

Thank you for the post on DansComp. Yes, amazing prices on spokes. They cut and thread themselves, and supply Sapim DB and straight gauge up to 300mm. $8 shipping to Calif.

4funbikes 03-01-17 06:23 AM

I get employee discount at a shop and still use Dan's Sapim spokes.

3speed 11-27-17 03:45 PM

Anyone know if Lee is still doing spokes? If so, anyone have his current contact info? I don't have an ebay account, so that route won't work for me.

52telecaster 11-27-17 07:44 PM

dan's comp rocks.... still 40 cents for db stainless spokes. built 4 wheels with them.
