Peugeot ::: Is this a PX-10? What did I just buy?
9 Attachment(s)
Just purchased this frame from a guy who claimed it was a PX-10. I'd gone into the purchase thinking the only way to truly identify one was by the color of the font on the "531" stickers...of course, this frame has NO 531 stickers at all. There are discolored spots where they were removed, and there's some obvious white touchup repainting that's been done...
Can anybody help me determine conclusively what I've got here? http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=207873http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=207874http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=207876http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=207875http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=207877http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=207878http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=207879http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=207880http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=207881http://www.bikeforums.net/images/misc/pencil.png |
1970 -'73 PX10
Square Peugeot emplems indicate a 70's model, in '74 the Reynolds decal was moved to the down tube. |
Yes sir! Chrome is right as well as the fancy Nervex lugs early 70's at least by the decals have fun!
|
Probably '71 or so, based on the hooky thing on the left rear DO along with the Type II DT decal.

That thing brings back some very good memories related to that year and model. My first good bike. Thanks. That one has some seriously fine patina on it. You going to leave it? Hope so. A little spit and polish and a couple decals and you're good to go. Or maybe, as-is. Some nice battle scars on that frame. Good snag.

It's too bad the PO did not keep the original parts and drewed the bars like that - (I can't imagine why he removed the head badge).
It will cost a few buck to put it all back, but you can be sure it will be well worth it. Lucky you have the crank. Also be sure you service it - certainly the Previous owner did not. Be sure you get French drop bars to fit the stem. PS - that's an AVA stem so inspect the quill for any incipient cracks - if it looks good, grease it good and reinstall it - but don't hop any curbs with it! ;) |
You will love your PX10. I liked the one I had and still have almost everything to build up another one. All I need is a frame and fork set.

Excellent foundation. Definitely a PX-10.

I can see where whatever missing (Reynolds?) decal there originally was is missing from the tube about 2-3" below the "inoxydable" decal... What is the little braze-on stub you can see on the righthand side of the photo in image #5? Is that some kind of "stay" for the shifter mounting? It's got— Macfac "Racer" front brakes and levers Stronglight cranks Simplex "Prestige" rear derailleur (that came with it in a Ziplock, along with another AVA stem) Lyotard 136R pedals a single 45-tooth Stronglight chainring Paid $40. I'm thrilled to have her, after a long time on the lookout for a PX-10, but she's rough and there's so much missing. In this condition I don't know that I'm particularly excited about a long quest trying to restore her to "original," (and I wouldn't mind having a single speed). What would YOU do as far as rims and gears and paint and whatnot if you were starting at this point? |
You can tell a PX10 by the color of the font on the 531 decal? That's a new one on me!

Picture #5 is of the dropouts and chainstays. No shifter mounting there!

Lovely bike and I'm the type that likes the look of a worn bike. I think it adds character. If you do restore it though a true and accurate paint job would be beautiful (expensive?) aswell

Anybody? Where would you go w/ this?
Your frameset is in reasonable condition, it does NOT need paint. Because of this I'd take the opportunity and build something that meets your needs, tastes, desire and budget. French BB cups and BB's are readily available which opens up alot of build options. |
I'll leave the paint as-is.
Y'all just watch—I'm gonna make it a 3-speed. :p |
Score!
You already have a headset and crank. Those can be the hardest things to acquire and fit, so if they are in good condition, keep them. The rest will be fairly easy. And it would make a heck of a 3-speed, even if you're joking. Put a rack and fenders on, and use upright handlebars. |
