Look What I Picked Up on the Way Home From Boston! Coppertone Anyone?

Radiant Coppertone on a 1965 Schwinn Super Sport,to be more exact! :D

Yesterday I had to drive to and from Southy to pick up an appliance which can't be found any place in NH. :( Before I left I scanned CL-Boston, and spotted an ad of interest. ;) 6 emails later, I decided to detour into Woburn on the way back.

The paint, chrome, and aluminum bits all have great restoration potential. Looks to be all original except the tires. Even has the chrome Titan stem and the "Sport" scripted and sleeved bars. While a 22" frame is smaller than my normal 24", I think I can make this work.

Here are the pictures from the seller. I'll take better ones later today.

Even the Hunt-Wilde bar tape appears to be original.

Chrome fork, classic Weinmanns, and fantastic headbadge!

Sprint drivetrain, hubs, and QR levers.

Even the Brooks B-15 has some life left.

Nice score - and my favorite Schwinn color! Soooooo 60's!

Let's see a full side view pastorbob!

Bob, Nice find! I worked in a Schwinn bike shop the summer of '67. Gold was THE color and I've wrapped more than my share of handlebars with that tape.

Better pictures later today. I just couldn't wait. I'll clean and polish the top bar to show the possible outcome.

Just snagged a role of Hunt-Wilde Coppertone bar tape on ebay! I'll replace the tires (they don't match, one is a Raleigh, the other a Schwinn). I also have a spare set of white Weinmann brake lever hoods I've been hoarding. This baby will look sweet.

Very nicely done! I like the color. I look forward to the after pictures.

Wow! Great find, Pastor Bob. It appears to be in really good original shape. Mmmmm, forged dropouts and chromed fork.

Italuminium 07-01-11 08:08 AM

score!

Bob is the Coppertone King, indeed. Congratulations!

Coppertone is the bee's knees for 1960s Schwinn fans. There are many great colors in their charts, but this is one of the favorites among all collectors.

You can't beat the forged dropouts with RD hanger, the lack of an integrated kickstand hanger, and brazed on down tube shifter bosses. Even with the all steel one piece cranks, this fellow only weighs 29lbs. Almost as light as the 1968 Raleigh Record I restored for a friend. After I replaced the steel rims with aluminum ones, it weighed 28lbs.

Check out the paint potential in the BB area.

Cool bike indeed.

Very cool, I just did a '64 Varsity and I also noticed the weight difference between these old ones and the later versions. I know the outside diameter of the tubing is smaller on the ones of this vintage.

Looks like a fun project! Nice bike.

Ive got a sports tourer of a similar vintage I picked up recently... Beautiful but the opaque blue defintely isn't as nice as the coppertone.

Nice score Bob!

+1 By far, my favorite Schwinn color. Nice score!

DavidW56 07-01-11 01:00 PM

Nice one! Grail bike for me -- just about any coppertone Schwinn my size would do. I never see them on CL or at the yard sales, so that's a good find for you, PB. I've seen them only at the Ann Arbor - Saline Bike Show.

Nice find! It looks real cool. Yes, that color is an attention grabber. I'm a convert! ;)

congrats nice find

Pastor Bob, that is really cool! Schwinns just seem to find you.....

Is that Sprint RD tweaked? It seems to be sitting at an odd angle.

realestvin7 07-01-11 04:42 PM

That's one fillet brazed schwinn I would ride. Nice.

You never know when these things will pop up. I posted the following CL ad from the NY CL on the ebay/CL "are you looking for" thread this week.

Pre-1963 Schwinn Varsity made in USA - $25 (Setauket, NY)

This is a man's 10-speed bicycle from the early 1960s when Schwinn still made frames in the U.S. The handlebars and tires were replaced (seat too) to make it easier and safer to ride, but the frame is the Chicago-made Schwinn Varsity frame. The bike clearly needs work, but is rideable as is, and the tires are surprisingly airtight (that is, it has been in the shed for years, and the tires are not flat). You could use it as is, or if interested in vintage bikes, use the frame in a rehab.

Coppertone is my favorite, too. I used to have a '69 (I think) coppertone Breeze named Jean. Looking forward to more pics!

nlerner 07-01-11 07:55 PM

Great fine, Bob, but that's much too small for you! Will Mrs. PastorBob be riding that one?

I like that find! Coppertone is right-on, power to the people !

I really am pulled towards bikes that have all chrome forks too. Double nice with the 2, color and chrome.
