Looking to buy a frame by Johnny Kay. He was my father.
Any info gratefully received. Thanks

Here at C&V there are plenty of discussions of the "grail bike" that we'd like to find, but few are as poignant as this. Best of luck to you Gerald.

realestvin7 07-05-11 12:11 AM

Any info on his old builds? I'm curious.

mikegreen 08-04-11 02:02 PM

Hello Gerald - search eBay UK now, look in Sporting Goods > Cycling. The ad for a Johnny Kay bike can be found by entering "vintege raceing bike". No, not my mistake, thats how its being sold. For sale by eBay user Andycam1964, location Hereford. Auction up on August 8th. Good luck.

Very nice for a first post. I'll pm the info to Gerald, as he might not check in here too often. Maybe his PM will ping his email inbox. Good eyes, mate!

I just sent Gerald an email with the above post. Hopefully he'll respond
here.

Gerald, the other thing you might do is contact Hilary Stone, he posts here sometimes
but can be found at HilaryStone.com he has a great line on UK frames etc.

Gerald, This is the link to the auction in question:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/vintege-ra...#ht_500wt_1089

You should contact the seller directly if you can. He posted his phone number in the auction:

"vintege raceing bike in need of new tyres otherwise all working was told it it a pro bilt bike contact after 5.30 pm for more info on 01544327714"

lostarchitect 08-04-11 02:59 PM

I also sent the seller a message to expect contact from Gerald.

Amesja 08-04-11 08:04 PM

Wow, great post. I hope you find one!

I have the '54 Raleigh my father bought when he was 13 and it's my most treasured bike. But having a bike BUILT by one's own father has to be one heck of a holy grail.

Good hunting!

lostarchitect 08-05-11 09:21 AM

The seller wrote back to me and is expecting to hear from Gerald. I sent Gerald a PM about it. I hope we can make this happen.

Sixty Fiver 08-05-11 09:26 AM

Saw that the listing was removed and hope the seller is one that is willing to work out a nice deal with Gerald... the bike in question looks very nice what with Nervex lugs, nice badges, and Campagnolo kit.

ColonelJLloyd 08-05-11 09:32 AM

Great. This thread probably cost Gerald more dough if he does end up with the bike. :(

From the eBay seller:

i am removing this listing as i need to find out more ionfo on it as it has has drawn a lot of interest i will relist soon regards andy

lostarchitect 08-05-11 09:52 AM

I think he's just looking to work something out with Gerald. The seller seemed like he was an OK guy to me.

Anyway, Gerald asked for help.

due ruote 08-05-11 10:24 AM

Looks like a very cool bike; I hope the connection is made. Frankly I can't imagine the seller not wanting the bike to go to Gerald, as long as they can agree on a fair price.

Somewhat of a minor point, but is the bike your size by any chance? I'm guessing that, at least occasionally, you will want to ride it.

lotek 08-05-11 10:34 AM

no response from Gerald to my email.
still waiting to hear either place (here or my mail acct).

mikecoles 09-20-11 05:44 PM

Hi Gerald. Did you find a Johnny Kay? I have one myself which was passed to me in the eighties by my uncle who raced it in the sixties. I have upgraded the components but the frame is as elegant as ever..a pleasure to ride. Its been all over mainland Europe, Ireland and the UK on tours over the years and on at least a couple of occasions it has come very close to being stolen ..once on tour in Slovenia and once in Ireland so have grown very attached to it. Having just joined the Forum, I was delighted to find information about your father Johnny Kay . I do hope you are successful in your quest.

Really nice thread. Bike Forums C&V. The best of the internet bike people.

lostarchitect 09-20-11 07:48 PM

Gerald never wrote me. The seller of the bike sent me a couple messages asking to be put in touch, but alas. With no response from Gerald, nothing I could do.
