Sierra vs. Sierra Comp?

I have an '89 Schwinn Sierra Comp that I found about a year ago and use for bike path riding. I recently came across a picture of a Schwinn Sierra - no "comp" - that looked just like my bike. Does anyone know what the difference was between the two?

Have you checked the catalogs? This is a good place to start.

This is the Link to the 1991-2000 ones.

Best of luck.

I looked there, but I didn't see anything with the '89 mountain bike line, only road bikes. This site is a great resource that I have used before.

Wow, your Sierra comp is completely awesome. The decals combined with the chrome accents look amazing. Is the non-comp sierra the same age, with the same decal package? I have an older model that is just labeled Sierra, but it also looks completely different from yours. Mine is smoked chrome and my sister has a red one, Schwinn really did a nice job with some of these mountain bikes.

Here is a picture I found on the internet. The color, decals and chrome look just like mine, but no "comp".

BTW, I always thought the smoked chrome bikes were the most attractive of the lot.

I have the same bike, purchased in 1986. My son recently took a fancy to it, so I may have to find another one.

I bet the different name reflects different components on the same frame. I see the one you linked to has Shimano Exage, so I am betting that the Sierra compe was higher end. Mine is the lower Sierra of it's day, the high end version was called the High Sierra.

I picked up an 88 Sierra last month, similar finish except blue paint over chrome. The 88 model has a U brake. And indeed Exage equipped, with a 6 speed Uniglide freehub. The frame is 4130 DB chrome moly.

i picked up the same bike last month! it has been built up as my "go anywhere" touring bike

mine has the Exage biopace group with the rear u brake which i love, it locks up the rear wheel like a pair of vice grips. i changed out the front cantilevers for a modern pair from origin 8. i also changed the brake and shift levers for a nice pair of NOS suntour thumbies and dia-compe brake levers.

O.P. my guess is the the difference between the sierra and the sierra comp is components just as was the difference between the sierra and high sierra. What components dose your comp have? deore? i love the black and chrome with those decals, i keep going back and forth as to whether or not i like the decals on mine.

The '89 Sierra Comp has a Mountain LX drivetrain, cantis front and back. It was the first year with Shimano's hyperdrive shifting. Chainrings are Biopace HP, almost round. The whole bike is stock except for saddle, handlebar and stem. The original owner had swapped the bar for some steel hi-rise ugly looking thing, and the stem was original but too long for me (I still have it.)

Very nice condition! I really like how you configured yours. Mine's the same size, but in trashed condition. I didn't mind, I'm stripping mine to reveal the chromed frame. It will get a road bar, road brake levers, and possibly make it a single speed with that Uniglide rear. I have a set of smooth treaded 1.5" tires mounted. Glad to read the Exage U brake is good. I was a bit worried given the plastic-covered stamped steel construction of the unit.
