Gitane with Spidel components

Just picked this up today. Not familiar with Spidel parts but I think they are made by Simplex. The tubing is Super Vitus. Something must have happened to the rear der. as it has a Shimano rsx on it now-too bad!! Anyway, I think this is a super corsa model from the mid or early 80s. I loved the decals and color as it reminds me of the old renault team with Hinalut and Lemond.....back in the day.

I have a Gipiemme RD that is just a rebadged Simplex SLJ6600. I have seen Spidel badges on them as well. It would not be out of line to put a Simplex RD on that(if you cant find a Spidel label).

Nice find, Joe. Let me know if you find one your great scores in a 63-65cm frame....

That Super Vitus 980 tubing rides like nobody's buisness. How much does it weigh?

+1 to what Roger says. Put a Simplex on it.

A very nice bike and a beautiful color too, Joe.
Congrat's on your find !

If you want something that will shift close to how that Shimano does, try to find a Spidel branded Simplex "Aerodynamic" SLJ6600. It won't be cheap, (could be 150 to 200 bucks for NOS) to complete the period group on your bike. Don't change anything, otherwise, cause what you have there is top notch stuff from Spidel and is period correct to the bike.
Congratulations on the great Gitane find!

Stunner. Would love a Spidel gruppo bike, especially on a Gitane.

Didn't Spidel at one time manufacture watch straps/cuflinks etc?

Regards,
J T

thanks. it weighs in around 20lbs or so. yes,i will look for the correct rear derailluer but i think ill have my work cut out for me. this looks just like the one Hinault road buy his was campy equipped.

BRILLIANT(E)!!!

IIRC the Spidel badged hubs were what the Atom 700s became after one of the consortium's intermittent bouts of restructuring jiggery-pokery. And no one has ever accused those of not being quite top-drawer.

Don't you mean the Mallard 700's? Those are the hubs I've seen with Spidel sets and pre-Spidel, Simplex/Mallard/Mafac French groups.

To heck with the simplex rear derailleur idea. Give that baby a Huret Jubilee make her a real looker :)

Kurt, yer signature's killing me. Just sayin'.

Anywhoozle, I guess I wasn't aware there was all that much difference between the Maillard and the Atom stuff? I was told that they were the same hub off the same machines with different decals-- so, have I been misinformed?

Am I gonna have to storm into my friend's house and cook a fool?

Grand Bois 07-11-11 07:11 AM

It's worthy of a Spidel badged Simplex Super LJ 6600 Aerodynamic.

23skidoo 07-11-11 07:22 AM

J T, that was Speidel, with their famous Twist-O-Flex watchbands.

I've heard that story, but in reference to Normandy Luxe red and gold band hubs. They'd give them a spin at the factory and the better spinners got gold bands.

That Gitane probable has a Spidel badged Stronglight A-9 headset, too.

Not to brag, but I just bought a 1980 Peugeot PY 10 S with tous les équipements Spidel. I'll show you some pics if you're nice.
