1983 Cannondale ST500 garage sale find

Just picked up a 1983 Cannondale ST 500 for $10 at a garage sale. No time to go through it right now or get pics, but they will follow tomorrow hopefully.

So while cleaning it up and adjusting the headset, took a look at the serial number and went to vintagecannondale.com Serial number begins with AA, making it a 1983 model, which also makes it an ST 500, as they only made one complete bike in 1983 it appears.

You're already ahead. Even is you stripped it down to the frame and sold it you'd make money. I keep checking garage sales but Walmart bikes seem to dominate...

So the tires held air and seem to be relatively new. Gear changes are crisp, brakes work, headset needs adjustment, but all the bearing are going to be repacked anyway, so that will get addressed. Has Suntour Cyclone II FD and Mountech RD, SR Apex triple crankset, Super Champion Competition rims, NGC 500 brakes, Gran Compe levers. Not sure of the make of the bars, but the are touring bars. Avocet Touring I leather saddle. Has a but of paint damage on non drive side seat and chain stays.

That's one sweet ride - - -

But it's even sweeter when you score like that!

PS- The Montech is a great wide range DR but you have to keep it clean.

Thanks for the link. Was that from the vintage cannodale site? They have what appears to be the same brochure on their site.

Cannondale touring bikes are the holy grail find as far as I'm concerned, especially the ones with cantilever brake mounts. Yours has caliper mounts, but its still an epic bike.

These have 1" quill headsets and stems, freewheel hubs, fit wide tires and fenders, have comfortable geometry, and are lighter and stronger than a Rivendell frame. They climb like a mountain goat and will outsprint anything steel. They come with nice steel forks, but I'd always upgrade them to a custom steel fork (Waltworks) for the cyclist and touring load to save weight or gain strength.

I'm always looking for Cannondale ST touring bikes in the 27" size if anyone has any leads.

The ST500/300 was an awsome bike. I had one of too. The ST300 was a frame only where the ST500 was a complete bike. I think it was great that this company decided to build a bike to go along with there core business of luggage, backpacks and panniers. I also like that they were very understated with the decals on the bikes.

IMHO 2nd best touring bike EVAR only second to Miyatas. My only complaint was the diacomp G sidepull brakes on my ST500, they worked as well as they should but were a bit weak when loaded or pulling a 100 lbs trailer.
Mine was similar to yours but with a huret duopar rear derailer and Diacomp G sidepulls. I've seem so many variations of RD on these bikes. It seems that most of the 1983 bikes were standard build other for the rear derailer. I still have the duopar Rd and the Cannondale handelbar bag
