Does anyone know if the velodrome in Flushing Meadow is still around (bad pun)? Is it still a functional track or has it been demolished or...?
I Googled it. It's the Kissena Velodrome and it's still there and it still looks functional. In the satellite photo, you can see two riders side-by-side on the back straight away. The Sepulveda Dam velodrome is also still there. It looks to be in great shape from what I can see. That entire park is really pretty cool. They have the velodrome, a very long bike path, model airplane fields (including a sub-scale straight runway for the REALLY BIG model airplanes), golf courses, baseball fields, ... all sorts of stuff. |
I saw it in 2005, and riders were training on it. It's in good condition now. I guess I should look up the schedule of races. It's MUCH closer to me than Trexlertown or Breinigsville or wherever that place is. Then again, given New York City traffic, that doesn't necessarily it takes less time to get there!

I grew up in Berks County, and recall that back in the day (late '70s) if there wasn't an event going on at the velodrome you could just show up and ride. Can you still do that? I bet a few injuries put a stop to that at some point. We did spend a few afternoons doing laps on road bikes (brakes and all).
I really would like to get there again this summer. Haven't been to the races in a couple of years, but always enjoy it. I live about 300 miles away these days, unfortunately. |

I don't see how the velodrome makes enough money to stay in business...they charge next to nothing, concessions are cheap, they don't hit you for parking and they're only operational for about 4 months.
It is an absolutely fantastic time btw. I drug my wife there 2 weeks ago for the sprint finals and she had a blast! This Friday are Nationals, so that means Thursday will be a VERY busy day at the bike shop that I work at, which is right across the street from the track. For $8, you can't beat going to watch some races, it's great! |

Sorry I missed it too. Son's birthday and my great grandmother came in from Florida. I remember when they built it and I had a friend who was a nationally ranked sprinter back in the mid 80's. It used to be open to the public on Saturday mornings(?) not sure if it still is...

I think they get enough money from the sponsors. The name changed to Valley Preferred from the Lehigh Valley Velodrome, the Valley Preferred is part of the hospital I work for (which is FREAKIN' HUGE!) and has plenty of money.
