78' Cilo Swiss Team bike vs Italian Atala frame?

Hi I'm looking for a nice vintage ride. I don't know much about bikes and I'm kinda new to it all but I'm learning but by bit.

I've come across these two bikes and would like any opinions on them.
--

The first is a 78' Cilo Swiss Team bike. Columbus tubing (SL or SLX i think I'm still to hear back).Fully equipped with first generation shimano 105 golden arrow group which I hear is one of the rarest shimano groups I'm told. (front, rear Derailleurs, cranks, brakes, shifter all with the golden arrow panto). Bike as shown in the pics

The guy is asking USD700...

- Does this seem like a good deal/ buy? Is the Shimano Golden Arrow set up desirable (compared to campy)?

- Where do people stand on the older Cilo frames, how would it compare to a nice vintage Italian frame (I really was trying to find a suitable vintage tommasini or other Italian frame but not much luck where I live)...

---

The second bike is a Classic Italian Atala frame . Black with white decals.
* Campy Chorus Headset, used but in good condition
* Campy NOS old style adjustable bottom bracket
* Shimano seatpost
* Campy Seatpost clamp bolt and dropout adjustment screws.

price is USD$580...

On a frame vs frame scenario which is the better frame? The Cilo seems like I'm getting a lot more bike for the money.

Any idea how much i'd need to spend on the Atala to put her on the road with nice parts?

What's the view on the older Atala frames?

Thanks and great forums and help/ advice would be a huge help...

:]

Cilo and Atala both made some higher end stuff and some entry level. I think prices on both are high.

near as I can tell, the Columbus decal on the Cilo looks like SL or a lower tubing. normally SLX frames have a red border on them.

as for the Atala a NOS Campi BB can be a good thin if the seller knows whay model and year it is, so you can find cranks to match it.

or is you do not like that crank you can resell it.

personally I think both may be a tad high, and I am not sure Golden arrow is exactly rare (although finding a complete bike may be these days) either.

do they fit? where do you live? maybe there is a nice C&Ver near you who would not mind going alonfg to look them over. check CL in your area and see what similar bikes are selling for. I think I may go look at the Cilo and offer $550 and see if the seller bites.

BTW Welcome to the fourms. those are both great bikes for starting your C&V addiction

The decal on the Cilo is a TreTubi decal from the 80's so I'm not sure where the seller is getting the '78 date from. Both the bikes look like they have been re-finished which may account for the higher prices.

You can see that? I guess I need my readers for the computer too

TriTubi makes sense for a 105 group though

HAH! No I can't read it, but that era, gold back ground decal with type below the dove is Tre Tubi, and I can see that.

Actually it looks like it is the "Tre Tubi Aelle" decal like this one from Hilary Stone.

Hi thanks so much to all for the info (again i'm a complete newby and just like riding and have been borrowing my friend ride)... Both bikes fit but I live in Asia so finding a nice classic is not easy so I can't be too fussy...

Is SL tubing considered lower than SLX as I thought both were the top end (along with 531)? Where does TreTubi come in the grand scheme of things?

I think i'll stay away for the Atala as sourcing the other parts to put her on the road may be tedious but I'll go check out the Cilo and maybe make an offer taking into account all your advice (or else just wait till the right one comes along)...

Any idea how much shipping would be on a complete U.S or Europe based bike to S.E Asia approx?

I kinda want to keep the budget down around 600-700 (but still want as high quality stuff as possible) would i be better off looking for a nice HQ frame done up as a SS (I will use the bike for training and where i live is very flat so I don' think SS training would be a problem)?

Thanks again and Cheers!

SL isn't necessarily lower than SLX - SL predates SLX. The differences are negligible - SLX is slightly heavier and maybe a little stiffer. It's ridged in certain parts (BB shell area). I, like others, don't think it's truly an SL bike and 105 golden arrow is not a high end or especially valuable group. I'd pass.

they are both nice bikes but the Atala might be considered "better" since it has an all SL frame and some decent Campy Chorus/Shimano parts, but $580 for that frameset is too much. And I like Cilo bikes but $700 for that one (Tre-tubi with Golden Arrow) is too high. I think you can do better that either of these for that money...keep looking, be patient.

+1 - neither are top rate bikes and both are VERY high.

I would not pay $500 for that bike. If I really, really was in love, I MIGHT go as high as $350 and would consider that high'ish. I'd guess if he put a good condition Cilo with Golden arrow on ebay it would bring about $300.
