I don't know... I dated a girl who wore a lot of heavy boots with skirts. On a lot of people it doesn't work, but on her it really did... a lot like that yellow Colnago higher up the page.

And Tom, I'm not the sort of guy who rips toe straps either, but on those short, hard climbs the difference between my threadless and my quill stemmed bikes is quite noticeable. 95% of the time though there is no real difference in performance. The quills look so nice though that I'm willing to forgive their flaw.

If that's a threadless stem, then my name is Mario Confente.

Now if someone DID have the notion to fillet that same diameter stem extension to a 1" threadless clamp, they'd have something. The only drawback is that the quill end has to taper from the 1" ID to the narrower extension, requiring the steerer to be cut quite short. The stem cap would be substituted with a long bolt that would fit flush with the stem and run down to the star nut.

OK Mario, you got me. I seemed to recall that bike having a threadless stem, so did not take a close look at my pictures before posting. I also asked a few framebuilders there, everyone said they had lugs to build threadless stems, but nothing for threaded. I don't remember what that stem was, may be a one-off design for the show?

Velo Orange stem. I have been pleased with it. I think it looks pretty good and at least better than most that I considered.

Personally, I really like the threadless stem, however; it is not vintage. But it is nice to use and, as was the original target of this thread, tasteful applications are OK with me. I loved the one on my Marinoni Squadra...

Aesthetics aside, this is generally my biggest complaint against threadless headsets. But it's not an issue with the threaded -> threadless converters since the actual converter that the stem is attached to can raise/lower and fix itself like a regular quill stem.

Generally, I find that they will look pretty good if you get a -17 degree stem. Since -17 degree is what I need, it works out nicely. To make the appearance slightly more subdued, I used acetone to remove some of the graphics from a few 3T stems I had:

At one time, this bike had a silver seat post to go with the silver stem, now they are both black:

I left part of the graphics on because the stem looks kind of cheap without any graphics. I don't know if you think it's tasteful or not. You'll have to ignore the ergo bars, they are all I currently use. This set up could be made to look like a very subtle neo-retro with some Khatfulling. I have done it in the past with some bikes I have sold. It looked grand!

Impressive saddle to bar drop -especially on the Opus.

So, I'll be "that guy". There is no tasteful threadless stem for use with a C and V bike. The range is merely less ugly.

I have some threadless stems on C and V bikes, and it mars their beauty for me.

+1.

I'm sure threadless stems are a wonderful thing, a great improvement over all that came before them, but they are rarely pretty. They could be prettier. And I have yet to see one that improves the look of a vintage bike.

I really like the lugged ones that match the frame in style, color, finish, &c; but even so, I consider them off-topic.

I don't mind the 3T Mutant stem on my Colnago Master Extra Light (ignore all those spacers, I just got the bike yesterday and intend to cut the steerer down a bit).

Thanks(?) I think cameras and vintage steel frames tend to accentuate it much more than it really is. If this position was on a modern frame, It would be much more subtle. Even in real life it's does appear as large. One thing I think is interesting, is that you were able to correct identify which one has the most... from a picture. The difference between the Schwinn and the Fuji is only 1.5cm, which is mitigated in practice, by the low hoods on the Schwinn.

That is an awesome bike! Please repost when you make those changes. The Mutant stem looks great on it. I don't think it looks out of place at all (especially since the Master Extra Light is a very modern style frame). Anyway, I'm insanely jealous.
