Speaking of Traveling...OBX
I'll be in OBX next week. Aside from Robbietunes which I'm already aware of, does anyone have any bike related things for me to check out? I'll be in Duck. I'm familiar with the area as I've been going down there yearly for some time, but I'm always looking for something new.
undecided on which bike I'm bringing. Maybe Lotus Tourer like last time, and because I'll likely be towing my kids in a trailer for some of the time. I always make time for at least one 50-80 mile ride though. |
I was there last week. Route 12 is one boring ride. Lots of fitness riders, runners, and car traffic, even early in the morning. I considered riding down to Cape Hatteras, but the heat and family helped me decide against it. Wish I had a Surly Moonlander for the beach.

two years ago (i wasnt there last year as my daughter was being born that week) i rode to Roanoke Island. That was fairly interesting, though getting there wasnt.
I might ride into Elizabethtown this time for something different. |
I rode Emerald Isle once. Riding in that area bored the heck out of me. Perhaps having somewhere to go on the ride might be better. Riding randomly wasn't so fun.

You can do a nice loop south of Duck, a combo of designated "bike routes" and connector roads. Kitty Hawk cycles on Eckner St. in Kitty Hawk has the "bike route" map, Micheal the owner can show you the loop. It has some very modest hills (which I like), nice views of the sound, an ocean front stretch, etc. Riding from duck, doing the loop, and back to Duck should be about 30 miles.

If you get down to the Buxton area, here's a must visit:

We vacation in Whalehead every June. I do a fast 20 miler each morning. It's nice and kind of a change from the Hills Of Virginia. Turns out on the flats I can do 20 miles in just a skidge over an hour, so average speed was 19.8 MPH. Not bad for an old guy. On a Tempo.

thanks for the feedback/info guys.
I usually do get a quick ride in first thing in the morning. Though it will be tough this time unless I can convince one of my extended family members to watch my 1 and 2 year old during that time :) |
just thought I'd bump this in case I missed anyone
