Picked up some goodies from my dad today - Mavic 53-42 crankset, Dura Ace 7 sp 13-21 freewheel and very good condition, Selle Italia Super Turbo saddle (original to his Spectrum Ti that I now have).

He! When I built this bike I made a few silly decisions on purpose, style over function. One was to use the original NR crankset. That means a small chainring of 42T (or 41T if I was willing to lay a zillion bucks on ebay) to climb New England's native crop, the short steep hill, on roads laid out in the 18th century before they invented highway codes. That large cog is a 34T, IIRC, courtesy of Pastor Bob.
It also uses a Campy NR RD (though this one is early 80's, not mid 70's). To handle the freewheel the RD uses one of Henry III's aluminum cages modeled after the Rally. It works well enough, but a Suntour would be more precise. On the other hand, the 47/42 (IIRC) chainrings give it a nearly perfect half-step crossover.
English-threaded NR hubs, 32 spokes, Torelli Master rims, Vittoria Open Corsa EVO SC tires.
I have trouble going slowly on this bike. I can spin out that freewheel. But with a more conventional FW my C&V legs couldn't have handled these hill even when they weren't C&V.

Drilling holes in tires to lighten them is a step TOO far....Bet that was a wild ride!!! Hopefully no other damage to wheel or frame.

Got stopped pretty quick and no damage to the rim. We both jumped pretty good - sounded like a rifle shot when it blew.
