I would say this nicely makes up for missing the Kellogg built Ross a while back....

almost.

Great find!

Pogue - I don't know, that Kellog was SCHWEETTTT. Between the two...I'm not sure which I'd have chosen. I already have a Sachs, but I also wanted a Sports Tourer.

Looks nice. Considering the price you paid, I'd say it was a total score.

fender1 08-06-11 04:33 PM

Great score! Glad to see you got everything you were looking for at the right price. This bike needs bar-ends IMHO. Also is it spaced 126mm? If so, I have a a really nice Shimano 6 speed freewheel you are welcome to (13-30), I think. You should have at least one bike w/ sensible gearing.....:D

KonAaron Snake 08-06-11 04:41 PM

LOL - I do have bikes with sensible gearing you bastage...and this freewheel is already quite large (though 6 speed would be preferable). I am NOT a fan of barcons...I'd rather keep it to DT shifters.

I was riding my Koga Miyata today...weighed down with a solid 50 LBs of stuff I was running around town for my wife...and each time I had to accelerate from a red light, I inwardly blessed the ease of brifters. It would have been far more annoying with DT shifters...reaching down with the bike weighed down is no fun!

FYI - it's a 120 spacing and has a 32 on there.

fender1 08-06-11 04:46 PM

Man you HATE those DT shifters.....:D How about some thumb shifters on top of the drops??? You don't have one like that yet......

KonAaron Snake 08-06-11 04:50 PM

LOL...I'm OK with friction DT shifters, especially on road bikes. On bikes carrying weight, I like them less. I'm not wild about indexed DT shifters, but do have a pair in the stable. It's hard to like them after using a far more convenient, usable product.

My true hatred is reserved for barcons...maybe it's just that I haven't used them much, but they always frustrate me and I find the feeling on the steering weird.

noglider 08-06-11 04:54 PM

Aaron, I have an old pair of Eclipse panniers. Unfortunately, they're blue. ;) No, let me know if you're interested. I toured with them in 1981 and 1983. I used an Eclipse adapter strapped to my Jim Blackburn rack, which I also still have.

I put those Matthauser brake shoes on my Campy brakes in 1984, and I'm still using them. They work just fine, and they don't come unglued. Kool Stop absorbed the Matthauser company, or something like that. They seem to use the same formula for the rubber. The cooling fins turned out to be a fallacy, but they're cool in the other sense.

Bar-end shifters are just fine for me. Downtube shifters take longer to reach and therefore I shift less and therefore I get less benefit from my gearing system.

KonAaron Snake 08-06-11 04:56 PM

Tom - YES! PLEASE! I bid on a set of blue ones actually, but two pairs might make sense, and I'm not guaranteed to get them anyway.

noglider 08-06-11 04:58 PM

OK, I'll email you.

Picchio Special 08-07-11 04:26 PM

Mine is not dissimilar from Aaron's: front eyelets, rear eyelets (but on mine integrated into the rear dropouts via holes) and rear rack mounts (but on the inside of the stays). Mine's on worse shape than Aaron's - plus it's been a bit neglected. Need to prioritize some work on it. It's from 1978. Aaron - I can't completely be sure, but it looks like yours has the card suit cutouts on the inside of the fork reinforcement tangs, yes?

KonAaron Snake 08-07-11 04:29 PM

Yes sir, as does the road bike.

How are you working the levers?

I can't remember what I do with my hands, but it's steering neutral.

I have an easier time with barcons in the drops than I do STIs.

KonAaron Snake 08-07-11 05:09 PM

I'm picturing how I'm doing it...

Typically I reach down from the drops and use my palms.
