Do you ever go crazy?
 

What I mean is, sometimes I get so many projects going on at once that I can't concentrate. That is when I know it's time to scale back, or at least shelve some projects until I'm ready. I actually get to the point where I get sick of myself for thinking about bikes all the time when there are many other more important things in life. Know what I mean?

actually, like almost 2k of my almost 4k posts have been in the past 6 months. That's a tell tale sign I'm posting too much , buying too much, and not riding nearly enough.

Hopefully I can change that soon.

Spend lots of time with your kids and family.

Go for lots of rides.

Sell a bunch of bikes.

I've paid for a racing sailboat for my oldest son, paid for half of his trip to Sweden, Iceland, and Denmark for soccer tournaments, and underwritten half of our basement remodel.

All with bikes sales in the last year.

....and I've ridden the most miles this summer since 2006.

It really had gotten out of hand.

I still have some great bikes to enjoy and several more to sell.

Just sell 'em, it's easier to say goodbye than I thought.

Just choose your least favorite five, and then sell 'em through your favorite method.

Doesn't mean I won't buy a frameset in the next six months, as I'll just sell another bike when it arrives.

Building, restoring, and tuning up bikes are all perfectly good uses of your time. You are no doubt an asset to your friends, and you feel more of a sense of accomplishment in your hobby than almost any other hobby. As long as you're not using bike lingo in your pillow talk, you're ok. "let me get at your bottom bracket..." "what??"

Yes. Ever since I joined this forum.

An example: before BF, I complained bitterly to my wife that her TWO bikes took up too much room in the garage. So she sold one -- her childhood Schwinn Suburban.

Then came the 2008 yard sale purchase of a Pinarello, a Bianchi, and a Raleigh for $1 each. Research led to BF. BF led me to respect the Schwinn.

So I spent the last three years searching for as nearly an identical replacement to my wife's Suburban. And I got one. Along the way, I've picked up about a hundred other bikes.

I'm just grateful she's been barely tolerant of the 30-40 bikes that have filled one bay of the garage and the alley behind it. Five or six are restorations in progress. She'll be happy to see them go, and so will I.

Asking if I ever go crazy would imply there are times when I'm sane. This is not the case.

Right now I have the following projects waiting:

1. Univega Super Strada, put back into original condition and sell. Had it since 1986, just don't ride it any more. Full Dura-Ace AX in very good condition.

2. Schwinn Varsity cruiser. Going to put 26" coaster rims and make it into an upright cruiser bike.

3. Univega Gran Turismo. Build it. Got all the pieces together and ready to go.

4. Nashbar MTB. My daily rider. Needs rear wheel trued and minor maintenance.

5. GT Tequesta hobocycle. Have a frame and fork. Need to go through the junk pile and bolt it together. Schools starting soon, kids are looking for cheap transpo-bikes.

6. Suzuki GS1000G. My last street bike. Put it into sellable condition

7. Honda XR 100. Given to me with no paperwork. Put it into sellable condition

I will confess, yesterday I sawed up a Gary Fisher Aquila frame into tubing. The bottom bracket was stripped, the paint was trashed, a chunk of seatpost was rattling around loose in the seat tube. All that and a nasty dent in the top tube made the decision to bail out on the project an easy one. Too bad, the bike must have been a really nice MTB at one time.

i generally only work on one bike project at a time. sometimes i work on two simultaneously, but that tends to stress me out too much.

5 bikes sitting in the shed, none of them are ride-able, does that answer the question?

Happens to me all the time. Some "cures" that work for me:

1. Sell a bike, or maybe a lot of bikes. A couple of months ago I posted about having 35 bikes in my "to be rehabbed" queue. Now I am down to less than 10. Sold the rest.

2. Work on something else. This week I am building a screened in porch. Figured I needed it done by fall. Did I mention it is freekin' hot outside right now. Great time to be building a porch.....

3. Find a bike project that really needs help. Something that is missing parts, is in poor shape, or whatever. I get a sense of accomplishment bringing a bike like that back to life. My last project was a frame I picked up a year ago, bought it cheap, it had been laying outside in the weeds for a few years. Bringing it back to life felt good, really good.

4. Nothing beats selling a bike, one that has been hanging around way too long, to a buyer that really appreciates a nice vintage bike. Sold one last night at 10PM. It went to a good home.

Interesting to above, I always work on two bike projects at once. Its just how I like to do it. I much prefer this to working on just one at a time. I've got a nice dual bike work stand, keep two on it pretty much all the time. And I usually have two bikes for sale at any one time (two separate ads). I much prefer this over selling just one. Can't explain the why to this...

I'm just jealous that you guys have garages where you can keep them.

I just received my first bike last night that will require little to no work on my end for initial use. I don't feel so bad now... generally I've done nothing but buy money pit projects. Now I just bought a money pit rider. (It did come as a 1x10 and I have to put the double derailleur/shifter/rings on for it to be useful here. These were all supplied with the bike though, so that's ok).
