Sign this pledge!

I know, not everyone has a problem with bicycle acquisition. Some of us, however, need to cut back. So I have come up with a pledge that I will try to keep in mind when tempted. Here's what I came up with. What do you think?

I pledge not to buy* another bike until I've either (a) sold the last one I bought, or (b) put 500 miles on the last one I bought and sold a different one.

*See the loophole? I am free to trade, dumpster dive, etc.

KonAaron Snake 08-10-11 11:58 AM

I pledge not to sign internet pledges.

cudak888 08-10-11 12:01 PM

I pledge to leave C&V permanently if one more trivially idiotic thread shows up.

...and folks have the nerve to say women are petty. Sheesh!

I've already promised my wife, so this would be redundant. :)

N+1

marley mission 08-10-11 12:24 PM

does cash and trade count?

DavidW56 08-10-11 12:24 PM

N+2. My wife is very insistent that I buy no more bikes until I sell some more, and I am trying to comply. But now people are giving me bikes. These are all flippers not my size that need work, of course.

So, no, I don't need an internet pledge. I need a bigger garage, though.

Zaphod Beeblebrox 08-10-11 12:25 PM

I'm in until I get a bigger garage.....then its game on.

ColonelJLloyd 08-10-11 12:29 PM

I'll seriously sign this virtual pledge.

And, Kurt, you're bluffing.

-holiday76 08-10-11 12:39 PM

I pledge to rate this thread with one star if the ratings come back.

Ok fine, I'll sign....reluctantly.

noglider 08-10-11 12:39 PM

I wouldn't go to an AA meeting held at a bar, and I won't promise to kick the C&V habit on this forum.

tugrul 08-10-11 12:49 PM

This thread is worthless without pics of the bike you violated the pledge for.

Plenty of electrons to go around for the trivial.

Nice to know others have the same issues as I.

David Newton 08-10-11 12:56 PM

I'll pledge if one of you sends me a nice bike in my size.

I was wondering how long it would take for those words to come up!

DavidW56 08-10-11 01:11 PM

What I'm wondering is, do other C&V hobbies generate this much self-introspection regarding over-acquisition, or even hoarding? There are BF C&V members here who have other C&V hobbies, like restoring old cars or boats or stereos, or who collect old guitars or wristwatches or stamps or coins. So, do any of those collectors have problems limiting their collections of other stuff? Or are C&V bikes somehow more addictive?

I've heard that brick collectors don't move their homes very often.

Zaphod Beeblebrox 08-10-11 01:16 PM

people collect bricks?

David Newton 08-10-11 01:18 PM

Heck, people collect anvils!

fender1 08-10-11 01:53 PM

Does buying for other people count?

Over-acquisition is not the exclusive domain of C&V bike collectors by any stretch. It's just that collecting bikes consumes more space than most other C&V obsessions.

One of my better flips this year was a vintage miniature anvil I sold to an anvil collector... You bet there are anvil collectors out there.

-holiday76 08-10-11 02:02 PM

I do have a problem with this pledge. I don't think you should need to get rid of your LAST purchase to make room for a new one, just some purchase. I have no issues with the riding miles requirement.

Some people on here collect anvils. They call them Schwinns, as I understand it.
