Pointless?

For the money involved, this seems out there:

http://cgi.ebay.com/RARE-Vintage-GRA...item23134d8b52

Seller has a lot of "reference" materials in the accompanying photos on this auction, however, none are included in the nearly $2000 buy-in - not even a set of decals (were someone to try his hand at building it up), seatstays or fork. Personally, I dislike that kinda thing as it's confusing and sorta sad. How about replacing the pics of what we're not getting with more detailed ones of what we are getting?

Okay! So, for my $2000, what do I get?

Headlugs/headtube
Seatlug cluster
BB shell
Rear dropouts
Brake bridge
One/two carbon main triangle tube(s)
Three/four aluminum main triangle tubes
Chainstays
And perhaps a Wayne Stetina-signed jersey (from the vagueness of that part of the description, I can't tell if he's including that in this auction or planning on listing separately - it's unclear if the pictured jersey is signed or not)

Alternately, you can get a partial lug/droupout set from him in a separate auction for only $999...

Hmmm...no, I think I'll pass. Anyone out there a Graftek fan to whom this would represent a Holy Grail?

Just curious :)

That dude also sells a campagnolo toolbox WITHOUT TOOLS for 1200 $. Jeesh.

iab 08-13-11 01:24 PM

I'd never buy it but I do find it an interesting piece of history.

He's fishing for disposable income.

tugrul 08-13-11 01:26 PM

He swiped one of Kurt's photos for the bent frame straightener.

frenchbikefan 08-13-11 02:09 PM

this is the same guy people were complaining about a few days ago no?

Really? What, was it made out of some exotic wood with hand-carved inner tool trays?

Not even a tube of glue included.

Yeah whatever. That dude must be over his head. The local campagnolo market is pretty stoked here with lots of collectors sniping at every snippet to turn up, and when a full toolset appeared a few weeks ago it sold for like a 1000 euro. which is quite fair, I guess.

rootboy 08-13-11 03:28 PM

A thousand euros isn't bad for a full box. See them on ebay for way more.

Sounds like a great deal. Same dude from the OP sold a full box for $4K, http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...m=150620672247

true, but to me it seems that 4000 $ is for the sum of the parts. The set makes it worth that much scratch.

regarding the dutch set, remember this was a domestic sale with none of the crazy rich yankee internet millionaires or japanese industrial heirs bidding, more the usual retired dentist/surgeon/lawyer crowd :).

Bianchigirll 08-13-11 04:58 PM

if you have the jig to build it and the oven to cook it in it might be a fun project but other wise it is just some stuff to build a bike

Exactly my point, BG - $2000 and I don't even receive all the parts to build the main portion of the frame (less fork). Then, I've gotta find a fork and decals to finish it off if that's my goal. I sure can't see myself just buying what he has here and putting it on a shelf.

The seller sorta shoots himself in the foot when he describes how rare this stuff is: "first time on Ebay" and all that. If that's the case, wouldn't finding the seatstays and a fork be nigh impossible?

Even for a collector of esoterica, I can't see this being a gotta-have since it's incomplete. Nobody's going to pay a premium price for an old Columbus SL tubeset without the box, fork blades and seatstays - right?

Well, maybe someone. You never know; and as we all know, it only takes one :)

Plus, the NOS SL set that's on ebay now sells for 200$, not much of what the new SL costs at nova.
